Frankie Muniz Teases MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE Revival: “Oddly, It Was Right at Home”

A couple of months ago we learned that Frankie Muniz would be stepping back into the chaotic world of Malcolm in the Middle in a limited revival series with Bryan Cranston and Kaczmarek reprising their roles as Hal and Lois, respectively.

The former child star, who is now a professional NASCAR driver, recently talked a little bit about the revival with People, and teased the early stages of the four-episode Disney+ revival, which will celebrate the show’s 25th anniversary.

Muniz shared: “We started talking about [a reboot] literally 10 years ago—me and [co-star] Bryan Cranston—and slowly been working at it, and it’s finally a reality. So I’m really excited.

“I had to do some chemistry reads. I can’t tell you with what characters, but new characters that would be on the show. And it was so weird to go back and be with Linwood Boomer, the creator, and Ken Kwapis, the director, and be back in that mindset. Oddly, it was right at home.”

The revival’s story follows Malcolm as an adult, now with a wife and daughter of his own, who gets pulled back into family chaos when his parents throw a 40th wedding anniversary party.

Despite playing the main character, Muniz doesn’t have the fondest opinion of Malcolm himself saying he was “the worst” on the show and “sucked,” but added that he is “obviously so thrilled” to return to the Wilkerson clan and is excited “to get back on set with everybody.”

The original Malcolm in the Middle ran from 2000 to 2006, redefining sitcoms with its fourth-wall-breaking humor and sharp storytelling. The show racked up seven Emmy wins, along with a Peabody and even a Grammy, cementing its legacy as one of the most iconic comedies of its time.

Now, two and a half decades later, the Wilkersons are back, and there’s no doubt that things are going to get messy.
