Gal Gadot Drops Big Wonder Woman Return Condition: Zack Snyder Needs To Be Running DC

Gal Gadot has put a pretty massive condition on ever playing Wonder Woman again. If fans want to see her suit up as Diana Prince, Zack Snyder apparently needs to be running DC.

Gadot made her DC debut as Diana in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and her arrival was one of the movie’s better-received elements. She returned to headline Wonder Woman in 2017, which turned the character into one of the biggest successes of the DCEU era.

Things got considerably messier from there. Justice League gave audiences plenty of material that eventually became memes, while Wonder Woman 1984 was hammered by critics and fans.

Gadot later popped up for cameos in Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash, but those appearances ended up marking the final chapter of her time as the Amazon warrior.

There was briefly some confusion over whether Wonder Woman 3 might still happen. In 2023, Gadot said DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran had assured her that she and Patty Jenkins would continue developing the movie.

Reports soon contradicted that claim, and both Gadot and Jenkins have since talked about being surprised by the studio’s decision to kill the project.

Now Gadot has made it pretty clear what it would take to get her back. While promoting her new movie The Runner, Gadot was asked by JoBlo about potentially returning as Wonder Woman. Her answer was incredibly specific:

"If Zack comes back to run DC, I’ll come back,"

That certainly doesn’t sound like Gadot is eager to jump into Gunn and Safran’s new DC Universe. Gadot has spoken about what she says happened when the new leadership took over DC Studios. Asked whether Gunn and Safran had told her that she was finished as Wonder Woman, she explained:

"They told me the opposite," Gadot said. "They were like, 'We're going to develop it with you.' But I saw the way everybody else was handled, right? The Henry situation was not handled elegantly, to say the least. Same with Patty. [It] was not handled elegantly."

Henry Cavill’s return as Superman at the end of Black Adam was quickly followed by the announcement that he wouldn’t continue playing the character in Gunn and Safran’s rebooted DC Universe.

Gadot doesn’t appear interested in turning the situation into an ongoing feud, though. She also acknowledged that Gunn and Safran are simply making the decisions they believe are right for DC.

"I feel like, you know, we're all adults and it's all good. And it's not even about them. They are there, and they're there to do what they believe in, and it's all good. I'm so grateful that I got the opportunity to wear these boots and to have the character be so celebrated and be the vessel at that point in time."

There are still Snyder fans hoping Warner Bros. Discovery could eventually bring the filmmaker back into the DC fold, particularly after Paramount Pictures completes its acquisition of the company. The idea of Snyder actually replacing Gunn and Safran at DC Studios, however, remains a huge long shot.

Gunn and Safran are expected to remain in control of DC Studios, with upcoming projects such as Clayface and Man of Tomorrow carrying plenty of pressure to keep their new DC Universe moving in the right direction.

Even if Snyder somehow returned, restoring his original DCEU plans would be a complicated proposition. Snyder intended to continue his story with Justice League 2 and Justice League 3, but nearly a decade has passed since Justice League hit theaters, and it has been more than five years since Zack Snyder's Justice League finally gave fans his version of the superhero team-up.

At this point, even finishing that saga through animation or comic books feels increasingly unlikely.

Still, Gadot has now left the door open, just under one very specific circumstance. I just doubt we’ll ever see Snyder running DC Studios, I don’t know if he would even want that job!
