GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE Director Says Film's "Weird as F**k Villains" Were Inspired By THE REAL GHOSTBUSTERS
We’ve got some fun new details to share with you for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the inspiration behind it, and the wild new supernatural ghostly villains that it will introduce. According to director Gil Kenan, a lot of inspiration was taken from the fan-favorite cartoon series The Real Ghostbusters, which did some pretty bonkers stuff, which I loved!
While speaking to Empire, Kenan revealed that The Real Ghostbusters inspired the new movie with its "wild, original and weird-as-f**k villains." He added: "We wanted to bring that show's looseness and fearlessness to this movie. I think it's going to surprise people just how big this film is."
Co-writer and producer Jason Reitman went on to say that some other films from the 1980s also played a part in inspiring the story for Frozen Empire. He explained: "John Hughes was a big touchstone. That thing of a family in a station wagon, living in a crumbling home, the teenagers kicking back against their parents. [Finn Wolfhard's] Trevor's 18 now, so he's like, 'I'm an adult!'"
That’s not all! You’ll also find some Wes Anderson influence in the movie! Reitman added: “We wanted that Royal Tenenbaums thing of a family living on top of each other... but in the Ghostbusters' Firehouse," he added. "We see the Firehouse way more than in any previous Ghostbusters film. What's it like to sleep there, do laundry there? What's the attic like?"
You know what? As a fan of the Ghostbusters cartoon series, I love the fact that they looked to it for inspiration for this movie! This is gonna be fun! What do you think about the past projects that inspired the movie?
In the story, New York City finds itself freezing over due to an ancient artifact that unleashes an evil force! In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse – to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.
The movie stars Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson. They will be joined by Patton Oswalt, Kumail Nanjiani, comedian James Acaster, and Emily Alyn Lind!
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is slated to hit theaters on March 22nd.
