Giancarlo Esposito Has Talked to James Gunn About Joining the DC Cinematic Universe; Who Should He Play?
Giancarlo Esposito (The Mandalorian, Breakin Bad) is looking to join the DC Cinematic Universe, and the actor recently revealed that he’s met with DC Studios CEO James Gunn about a possible role in a film. During a panel at Comic-Con Panama, when the actor was asked if he might appear in a DC movie, he said:
"I had been talking to James Gunn about the possibility about being in a movie, so who knows? It could happen soon.”
If this is the case, chances are that Esposito met with Gunn for a possible role in Superman: Legacy, since that’s the movie that he was actively casting before the actors’ strike hit Hollywood. But, the actor also could have talked with Gunn about a role in another future DC project, Esposito obviously didn’t share any specifics.
The question is, what character in the DCU would be a good fit for the actor? Gunn still needs to cast Lex Luthor and the Superman villain Brainiac in Superman: Legacy, so it could be one of those characters. But what other characters in the DC universe would be a good fit for the actor!?
Esposito is no stranger to DC as he voiced DC villains Ra's al Ghul and Black Spider in the 2014 animated movies Son of Batman and Batman: Assault on Arkham, and he voices Lex Luthor on the adult animated series Harley Quinn.
Superman: Legacy will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
The movie stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific.
Superman: Legacy will launch the movie part of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1. It’s expected to begin in early 2024, and it’s scheduled for a theatrical release on July 11, 2025.
