Giancarlo Esposito Talks About THE MANDALORIAN Season 2 and Destroying His Dark Saber Props

The Mandalorian Season 2 has wrapped production, and while we wait for the epically awesome series to return in October, Giancarlo Esposito, who plays Moff Gideon in the series, spoke about the show and all the Darksaber props he destroyed.

One of the big epic surprises in The Mandalorian came at the end of Season 1 when Gideon emerged from his TIE Fighter with the legendary Darksaber. Star Wars fans all over the world crapped their pants at that moment.

During a recent interview with ComingSoon, the actor was asked if he was ready to give the Darksaber a hearty swing and he replied:

“I am. I really am. I want to say I’ve destroyed quite a few of them and the prop guys go, ‘Wow, you go all in.’”

Esposito went on to share his feelings about Season 2, saying:

“This season is going to be really great. This is the ultimate space western that’s so connected to things that we don’t know and don’t see. Originally George Lucas had a mentor and friend in Joseph Campbell. Joseph Campbell was all about the power of myth and the journey of the hero. Isn’t every one of our journeys the journey of the hero? … ’The Mandalorian’ is a series so steeped in myth and the hero’s journey to overcome anything, to be in service… I love this show. I really do. It’s visionary in so many ways and I am happy to be a part of it.”

There were a lot of great surprises in The Mandalorian Season 1, and I can’t wait to see what surprises Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and their team have in store for the new season.

In Season 2, Mando continues his journey with The Child as he takes him to the Jedi, and Gideon will continue hunting them down. It’s also been reported that Mando will encounter some characters from the Skywalker saga, and I can’t wait to see who they are.

Jon Favreau confirmed he would direct at least one episode this season. It was also previously reported that Carl Weathers would direct an episode, and it’s been said that Bryce Dallas Howard returned as well, with James Mangold and Robert Rodriguez reportedly helping direct sequences. It’ll be interesting to see what other directors were brought on board to tell these new stories.
