Guillermo del Toro Calls Hayao Miyazaki the Mozart of His Time - "Miyazaki San Is a Master of That Stature"
Guillermo del Toro has made it very clear that he loves the art of animation, and a few months ago he even said that he is looking to only make animated films in the future. He said at the time, “I only want to do animation.”
With Del Toro being such a big fan of animation, he has thoughts to share on Hayao Miyazaki the director of the upcoming film The Boy and The Heron, and several other stunning animated films produced by Studio Ghibli.
Del Toro believes that Hayao Miyazaki is the Mozart of his time. The filmmaker made a surprise appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival to introduce Miyazaki’s latest film, The Boy and the Heron, and he said:
“Animation is film, and tonight’s film goes beyond that. Animation is hard. We are privileged enough to be living in a time where Mozart is composing symphonies. Miyazaki san is a master of that stature, and we are so lucky to be here…He has changed the medium that he started in, revolutionized it, proved over and over again that is a tremendous work of art.”
Del Toro went on to call Miyazaki “the greatest director of animation ever,” and said that “he has made his films as full as dialogues and questions as he is. These are not easy films, but these are films that portray him so intimately, that you feel you’re having a conversation with him.”
You can’t argue with that. I love all of the films that Miyazaki has made over the years and it’s incredibly sad that after this next film of his, we won’t see any more movies made by the artist.
In The Boy and The Heron: “Through encounters with his friends and uncle, the story follows a teenage boy’s psychological development. He enters a magical world with a talking grey heron after finding an abandoned tower in his new town.”
