HBO Developing a V FOR VENDETTA TV Series With James Gunn Producing

V for Vendetta is making its return with a new adaptation coming from HBO, according to a recentl report the cable network is developing a new live-action series based on the iconic dystopian story, with Pete Jackson attached to write and James Gunn and Peter Safran of DC Studios on board as executive producers.

Joining them on the project are Ben Stephenson via Poison Pen and Leanne Klein of Wall to Wall Media, a division of Warner Bros. Television Studios UK. Warner Bros. Television will produce the series.

The V for Vendetta story first appeared as a comic serial written by Alan Moore and illustrated by David Lloyd. It debuted in 1982 in the British anthology Warrior before DC took over publishing in 1988.

The story is set in a dystopian version of Britain ruled by the fascist Norsefire party, where an anarchist known only as V, famous for his Guy Fawkes mask, wages a rebellion against the government with the help of Evey Hammond, a young woman he rescues from the regime’s brutal secret police.

If greenlit, the series would mark another major DC property heading to HBO, joining projects like The Penguin, which starred Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti and became a massive success with nine Emmy wins.

HBO also has Lanterns on the horizon, starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart, expected to debut in early 2026.

This wouldn’t be HBO’s first dive into Alan Moore’s universe either. The network’s acclaimed Watchmen series served as a sequel to Moore and Dave Gibbons’ original graphic novel and became a major hit when it premiered in 2019.

Pete Jackson brings a strong writing background to the project. He previously penned the BAFTA-nominated Channel 4 series Somewhere Boy in 2022 and also wrote The Death of Bunny Munro, an upcoming Sky Atlantic series starring Matt Smith, based on the novel by Nick Cave.

Of course, V for Vendetta has already seen a successful adaptation. The 2005 feature film, directed by James McTeigue and written by the Wachowskis, starred Hugo Weaving as V and Natalie Portman as Evey.

The movie received strong reviews and grossed over $130 million worldwide. It remains a cult favorite nearly two decades later, with Warner Bros. planning a theatrical re-release in November 2026 to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

Channel 4 once attempted to develop a V for Vendetta TV series, but that project never moved forward. HBO’s adaptation could finally bring the story back to life in a new, serialized format that allows its political and philosophical themes to breathe in a way the film never could.
