HBO Developing GAME OF THRONES Prequel Series About Aegon’s Conquest

HBO is developing another Game of Thrones prequel series and this one will tell the story of Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros. The project is in the very early stages, but producers and the cable network are currently on the hunt for a writer to take on the epic fantasy project.

It’s also being reported that there may “be a feature component to the project,” which means that HBO and Warner Bros. would produce a feature film that would set up the potential series. This is all stuff just being discussed at the moment, but it would be awesome to finally see a Game of Thrones movie get made!

The project would tell the story of “how Aegon and his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, used their army and their three dragons to conquer six of the seven kingdoms on Westeros with the exception of Dorne. In doing so, Aegon I became the first king of Westeros, the first to sit on the Iron Throne, and the founder of the Targaryen Dynasty.”

Those events all took place approximately 300 years prior to the events of Game of Thrones. This is actually a pretty exciting concept and I really do hope that HBO and WB move forward with it!

HBO has been looking at developing several Game of Thrones projects over the years, House of the Dragon got the green light and is in production on its second season. The only other real attempt at a Game of Thrones project was an abandoned pilot about the Long Night starring Naomi Watts. That project was ultimately scrapped in 2019. There was also a Jon Snow sequel in development at one point. Then there are animated projects in development as well.

George R.R. Martin created such an incredible fantasy world and I love that HBO is still dedicated to telling the stories set in that world.
