Henry Cavill Pokes Fun at JUSTICE LEAGUE's Infamous CGI Mustache Disaster in Hilarious Google Gemini Promo
Some Hollywood mistakes are impossible to forget, and Henry Cavill is still having fun with one of the most ridiculous superhero movie mishaps of all time. Nearly a decade after his mustache became an unexpected problem for Justice League, the former Superman actor is getting some hilarious revenge in a new Google Gemini promo.
For anyone who remembers the 2017 DC movie, Cavill's digitally altered upper lip was one of its most distracting visual effects. The whole mess started when Joss Whedon took over extensive reshoots for Justice League while Cavill was busy filming Mission: Impossible - Fallout.
There was just one problem. Cavill had grown a mustache for his role in the Tom Cruise action movie, and Paramount Pictures wasn't about to let him shave it off and potentially interfere with filming.
That left the Justice League VFX team with the unfortunate task of digitally removing Superman's facial hair. The results were pretty awful, giving Clark Kent an unnatural-looking mouth that was especially noticeable during his scenes with Lois Lane.
Now Cavill is getting in on the joke with a Google Gemini promo that introduces a game called Mustache Protocol, which takes direct aim at the digital disaster.
"Now, they say write what you know and what I know is mustache injustice," the actor says. "I give you, 'Mustache Protocol,' one man's mission to stop a rogue CGI artist from erasing all mustaches across the globe. A fun game for a serious problem."
That's a pretty great way to turn one of the strangest moments of Cavill's Superman career into a comedy bit. The idea of a rogue CGI artist traveling the world and eliminating mustaches is already funny, but having Cavill himself lead the charge makes it even better.
Of course, the infamous mustache was only one part of the troubled production of Justice League. Whedon's involvement resulted in major creative changes, and several cast members later spoke negatively about their experiences working with him.
Cavill's future as Superman also became increasingly uncertain. He had little involvement with the release of Zack Snyder's Justice League, but eventually returned to the role for a surprise cameo in Black Adam after Dwayne Johnson pushed to bring him back.
That appearance was supposed to lead to another solo Superman movie starring Cavill. Unfortunately, those plans were scrapped when DC Studios decided to reboot the franchise and move forward with a new version of the Man of Steel.
While Cavill's days as Clark Kent are behind him, he's got other geek-friendly projects to keep fans interested. He's set to star in the upcoming Highlander reboot, and he made a memorable MCU appearance in 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine as a cigar-smoking Wolverine variant.
It's fun to see Cavill embracing the humor of the whole Justice League mustache situation after all these years. The CGI removal may have been a disaster, but at least he's getting some good material out of it.
