Hugh Jackman Says His Voice is Damaged From All The "Growling and Yelling" as Wolverine

Hugh Jackman has spent over 20 years playing Wolverine over the course of six movies with a couple of cameos as well in the X-Men franchise. He’s also set to play Wolverine one more time in Deadpool 3, which the fans can’t wait to see!

In the time that Jackman has spent playing Wolverine, he’s done a lot of yelling, screaming, and growling. It turns out that all of that ended up damaging his voice. Jackman opened up about this during an interview with BBC’s Front Row saying:

“I’ve done some damage to my voice with Wolverine. My falsetto is not as strong as it used to be and that I directly put down to some of the growling and yelling. My vocal teacher in drama school would’ve been horrified with some of the things I did [as Wolverine].”

Jackman went on to talk about how he was taught a technique in school on how to yell without ruining your voice, but apparently, he didn’t use that while playing Wolverine, he just unleashed the fury. He explained:

“We learned a technique [in school] of how to shout and how to yell without ruining your voice. However, during Wolverine, I did some screaming and yelling and things that I think did damage to my voice. I’m working on it. I work with a singing teacher and I try not to hurt myself. I put a lot of effort into both physical movement and my vocal preparation for every role.”

Now he’s getting ready to do a lot of yelling and screaming in Deadpool 3! Maybe he’ll be a little more careful with his voice this time around.

Deadpool 3 is being helmed by Shawn Levy and it will be Marvel’s first R-rated movie. Levy previously teased how violent and foul it will be saying:

"We are writing, rewriting, developing, prepping 'Deadpool' every day now. It is such a blast to laugh every day. It is so delicious to hear and write and come up with these scenes where people are just talking foul. And the violence is in your face and hardcore, and it's very much a 'Deadpool' movie."

The movie also stars Ryan Reynolds and Emma Corrin. One thing we know about the film is that Wolverine and Deadpool are not going to get along. It was explained that Wolverine hates Deadpool. I also imagine the movie will see them on some kind of road trip together. Before Disney bought Fox, the movie “was gonna be a road trip between Deadpool and Logan. Rashomon style. For real.”

A Rashomon-style story is where the same event is recounted by several characters, and the stories differ in ways that are impossible to reconcile. It shows that two or more people can view the same event quite differently. I hope that they stick with that, because that would be so much fun!

Deadpool 3 is set to be released in theaters on November 8th.
