INVINCIBLE Showrunners Explain Why Lee Pace Is the Perfect Choice to Play Thragg in Season 4

Prime Video’s Invincible is gearing up for a massive return, and Season 4 is bringing with it one of the most dangerous characters from the Image Comics universe.

After surviving brutal clashes with powerful Viltrumites, Mark Grayson is about to face the most terrifying opponent of them all. The emperor of the Viltrumite Empire, Thragg, is finally stepping into the spotlight, and he’ll be voiced by Lee Pace.

Fans who know the comics understand just how serious this threat is. Thragg isn’t just another Viltrumite warrior. He’s the leader of the empire and arguably the strongest being Mark has ever encountered.

When ComicBook spoke with Robert Kirkman and Simon Racioppa, the showrunners broke down exactly why Pace was the ideal choice to bring this all-powerful villain to life.

Kirkman and Racioppa explained that Pace has a unique presence that perfectly fits the character. Rather than relying on loud intimidation, Thragg’s authority comes from quiet confidence and overwhelming power. The creators said:

“There’s like a calm power to Lee Pace that we really wanted him to lean into, to throw back to the fact that he is so comfortable, but exudes power in a way that is so calming and mesmerizing. It’s pretty remarkable.”

Thragg’s personality isn’t about screaming orders or flexing dominance. He’s already the most powerful figure in the room, so he doesn’t need to prove it. That subtle intensity is exactly what Pace brings to the role.

Interestingly, the showrunners even found inspiration in the world of professional wrestling when thinking about how Thragg should feel on screen. According to them, the character’s energy reminded them of one very specific WWE legend.

“He’s great. He sells power without having to shout, yell, you know, strain at you because he’s so powerful. He doesn’t have to do those things. Like Jake the Snake Roberts. It’s great. We talked about that all the time. He’s like Jake the Snake, right?”

For anyone unfamiliar, Jake “The Snake” Roberts became one of the most recognizable figures in wrestling after joining the WWF in 1986. Roberts stood out from other wrestlers because of his eerie calm demeanor. He didn’t need to rant or scream to command attention. His quiet intensity made him unforgettable.

Roberts famously carried a python to the ring and often unleashed it on opponents during matches. Throughout his career he battled legends like Randy “Macho Man” Savage and Rowdy Roddy Piper, becoming one of wrestling’s most memorable personalities.

Years later, his personal struggles and comeback story were chronicled in the documentary The Resurrection of Jake The Snake.

That same type of presence is exactly what the creative team wanted for Thragg. If you’ve read the comics, you already know that Thragg’s arrival signals a major shift for the story.

Earlier seasons pushed Mark to his limits, especially during his savage fight with the Viltrumite warrior Conquest. But Thragg exists on an entirely different level of power. As the ruler of the Viltrumites, he represents the ultimate challenge not only for Mark but for the entire Coalition of Planets.

If the animated series continues adapting the comic storyline closely, Season 4 will raise the stakes in a huge way. Thragg’s strength, leadership, and ruthless commitment to the empire make him the most dangerous enemy the series has introduced so far.

Fans won’t have to wait much longer to see him in action. Invincible Season 4 begins its weekly rollout on March 18, with the first three episodes arriving together to kick things off.
