James Cameron Is Still Developing His FANTASTIC VOYAGE Movie and He Offered an Update
It’s been over thirteen years since we’ve heard anything about James Cameron’s remake of the classic 1966 sci-fi adventure film Fantastic Voyage. I thought the project was dead, but Cameron is actually still developing it!
Cameron recently attended an event in Paris last week as “The Art of James Cameron” is now on exhibition at the Cinematheque Française. It was there the filmmaker offered the following update:
We’ve been developing it for a number of years, and we plan to go ahead with it very soon. Raquel Welch is not available, but we think we can make a pretty good movie.
Over the years, several filmmakers have been attached to this Fantastic Voyage project including Shawn Levy, Guillermo del Toro, David Goyer, Hugh Jackman, and Will Smith. There’s no word on who is being looked at to direct it now, but it sounds like we might find out soon.
The story revolves around a daring and unprecedented mission where a submarine and its crew are miniaturized to microscopic size and injected into the bloodstream of a critically injured scientist.
Their mission is to travel through his body and remove a life-threatening blood clot in his brain. Along the treacherous journey through the inner human body, the crew faces various challenges and threats, including the immune system's defenses and the ever-present danger of returning to their normal size before completing their mission.
When previously talking about the movie, Cameron explained that "medical imaging has come an awful long way since the '60s, when the first film was made. So we can do some pretty amazing stuff."
This could end up being a really cool remake and I’m looking forward to seeing what Cameron and his creative team end up doing with it.
