James Gunn Addresses Ezra Miller's Future as The Flash in The DCU Saying He'll "Wait and See"

While Ezra Miller gives a solid performance in the upcoming DC Studios movie The Flash, the actor is surrounded by controversy and their future in the DCU as The Flash is still up in the air. As you know, Miller went on a crazy streak where they were assaulting people, kidnapped a kid, was on the run from the police, started some kind of cult, and there were numerous other allegations.

The actor is getting help now, but there was a lot of damage done to their reputation and they did some things that were pretty jacked up. It was initially reported that we shouldn’t expect to see Miller back to play Flash again, which makes sense due to what they’ve done. Then it was reported that Warner Bros. was open to working with Miller again, which a lot of people seemed very confused about.

The director of the film, Andy Muschietti recently had this to say on Miller’s condition: “Ezra is well now. We're all hoping that they get better... They're taking the steps to recovery. They're dealing with mental health issues, but they're well. We talked to them not too long ago, and they're very committed to getting better.”

Producer Barbara Muschietti added: "And, I have to say, during our shoot, during principal photography, their commitment to the role was something we've never seen. And the discipline to the work, the willingness — physical, mental, and just wanting to go beyond the pale — is just amazing."

The big question is… what does DC Studios head James Gunn think about bringing the troubled actor back? While speaking to the Associated Press during the world premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn was asked if there were any plans for Miller to continue playing The Flash in the DC Universe, and this was his response:

“We’re just gonna have to wait and see, you know? I mean, we’ll see how things go, so, you know.”

Maybe if The Flash ends up making a ton of money at the box office, that will help make them seriously consider bringing Miller back. But, if they don’t want to risk it, it’s not like they can’t recast the role. While Miller was good in the movie, they might just be too much of a liability.

Regardless of what you think about Miller, The Flash really did turn out to be a surprisingly great movie that DC fans and audiences are going to enjoy.

The Flash hits theaters on June 16th.
