James Gunn Confirms PEACEMAKER Season Two Will Tie Directly Into MAN OF TOMORROW

James Gunn has made it clear that Peacemaker Season 2 isn’t just another chaotic chapter in the life of Christopher Smith. According to the filmmaker, the show is setting the stage for his upcoming Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow.

On Instagram, Gunn doubled down on comments he made earlier this summer where he described Peacemaker Season 2 as the “prequel” to Man of Tomorrow. Responding to a fan, he clarified that the season finale will connect “directly” into the new Superman movie, even though DC Studios has several other projects slated before then, including Supergirl, Lanterns, and Clayface.

Season two of Peacemaker has taken the series into wild new territory. The storyline finds John Cena’s vigilante hopping across alternate universes using inter-dimensional doorways built by his late, white supremacist father.

To make matters worse, he’s being relentlessly hunted by Rick Flag Sr., who’s out for revenge after his son’s death in The Suicide Squad.

How all of this connects to Man of Tomorrow is still a mystery, but Gunn’s comments guarantee that the bridge between the two projects is more than just lip service. That said, the bigger question is whether audiences will actually need to watch Peacemaker to understand Superman’s next big-screen story.

The short answer is probably not. Superhero shows have a track record of resetting themselves before the credits roll, leaving little narrative baggage for moviegoers.

Marvel’s Disney+ series are a perfect example. Loki ends with the God of Mischief still dead in the main timeline, WandaVision leaves Wanda in grief before her role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier sets up a Captain America switcheroo that never really sticks. Even Gunn’s animated series Creature Commandos ultimately had no bearing on Superman.

Still, Gunn’s suggestion that Peacemaker could enrich the theatrical experience is hard to ignore. For fans, the series is an unhinged character study of a violent man-child learning how to grow into a more balanced version of himself, without losing his warped sense of justice.

Man of Tomorrow is set to hit theaters on July 9, 2027. Meanwhile, season two of Peacemaker is currently streaming on Max, serving up all the chaos, violence, and crude humor fans have come to expect. It’ll be interesting to see how this series comes to a close and sets up Man of Tomorrow.
