James Gunn Offers an Update on THE BATMAN: PART II Script
The Batman: Part II is currently in the development stage with the script for the film being perfected before Matt Reeves starts shooting.
The creative team has been spending the time they need to make sure they have a quality script, and it’s good to know there are filmmakers that still do that these days.
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn recently offered an update on the film, saying that Reeves thinks that the script is ready to go.
Gunn took some time to respond to fans on Threads and when talking about the status of The Batman: Part II he confirmed that the script is still being worked on. When asked when he thought the script would be finished, Gunn said: "When Matt thinks it's ready!"
Reeves has been working on the script with Mattson Tomlin (Project Power, Terminator Zero) and the fans are curious to know what exactly they are cooking up for the next chapter of the story.
Gunn previously explained that Reeves thinks of “it as a Batman crime saga, which also includes the Penguin TV series, and it is its own thing, and he's hard at work on that."
It was previously reported that the next two sequels for The Batman will shoot back-to-back next year in 2025, but that hasn’t been confirmed.
It’s also been reported that the story for the sequel will be at least partially based on Geoff Johns' Batman: Earth One. The first film took a certain amount of inspiration from Vol. 1, so I assume that means the sequel would be more influenced by Volumes 2 and 3.
Batman: Earth One is set in an alternate universe where Bruce Wayne is struggling to find his purpose as Gotham City's protector. With the help of Alfred Pennyworth, a former SAS operative, Bruce embarks on his journey to confront both familiar and new villains along the way.
The story will explore the psychology of Batman as he seeks justice in Gotham. Hush is also said to be one of the big villains in the movie.
I imagine the film will also be a continuation of whatever we see happen in The Penguin series that will be released in the near future.
The movie stars Robert Pattinson as Batman, Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Andy Serkis as Alfred, Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, and Colin Farrell as Penguin.
The Batman: Part II is currently set to be released on October 2, 2026.
