James Gunn Responds to Recent Chaotic DC Movie Reports - “We Are Not Going to Make Every Single Person Happy”
The reports surrounding the future of the DC Cinematic Universe have been pretty wild recently. There are reports of Wonder Woman 3 being canceled, Henry Cavill not coming back as Superman, Jason Momoa’s time as Aquaman being done after the upcoming sequel, and Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam not getting a sequel. There are more, but those are the reports that are being talked about most online.
It seems like everything is leading to James Gunn closing the curtain on the Snyderverse for a fresh start, which makes sense, especially with a new regime change. It’s what I’ve been expecting since Gunn and Peter Safran came on board as co-CEO’s of DC Studios.
Well, now James Gunn has responded to these recent reports in a series of tweets, and he mentioned that they know they aren’t going to make all of the fans happy with their choices. But, they are promising to tell great stories that will service our favorite DC characters.
So. As for the story yesterday in the Hollywood Reporter, some of it is true, some of it is half-true, some of it is not true, & some of it we haven’t decided yet whether it’s true or not.
Although this first month at DC has been fruitful, building the next ten years of story takes time & we’re still just beginning.
Peter & I chose to helm DC Studios knowing we were coming into a fractious environment, both in the stories being told & in the audience itself & there would be an unavoidable transitional period as we moved into telling a cohesive story across film, TV, animation, and gaming.
But, in the end, the drawbacks of that transitional period were dwarfed by the creative possibilities & the opportunity to build upon what has worked in DC so far & to help rectify what has not.
We know we are not going to make every single person happy every step of the way, but we can promise everything we do is done in the service of the STORY & in the service of the DC CHARACTERS we know you cherish and we have cherished our whole lives.
As for more answers about the future of the DCU, I will sadly have to ask you to wait. We are giving these characters & the stories the time & attention they deserve & we ourselves still have a lot more questions to ask & answer.
Look, I personally trust that Gunn and Safran are going to deliver something great for DC fans. It may not be what we think we want, but I believe that these are the guys that are actually going to give Marvel Studios a run for their money!
So, even if all these reports are true, if they do close the curtain on the Snyderverse, they are going to build something even bigger and better to take its place. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a lot of these characters recast as they move things in a new direction.
What do you all think?
