James Gunn Shares Updates on PEACEMAKER Season 3, WONDER WOMAN Casting, and Charlton Characters in the DCU
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn is deep into preparations for Man of Tomorrow, but that hasn’t stopped him from dropping some fresh DCU updates on Threads.
From what’s next for Peacemaker, to the future of Wonder Woman, to the possible arrival of Charlton Comics characters, Gunn had plenty to share with fans.
The second season of Peacemaker is already shaping up to play a key role in the DCU. Gunn teased that the series doesn’t have one clear-cut villain, but instead several characters could step into that role depending on the story.
"Antagonist is a very broad (and despite its popular use, non-judgmental term)," Gunn explained. "So, depending on the storyline, the antagonist is Flag [Sr.], Harcourt, Peacemaker himself, or...someone else."
That mystery antagonist is still under wraps, but Gunn has previously described Peacemaker Season 2 as a “prequel” to Man of Tomorrow, which he says has been “much, much, much easier” to write than Superman and “so fun.”
As for whether we’ll get a third season, Gunn was cautious: "I think let's get to the end of the season before you answer that question."
With Wonder Woman still in development, many fans are wondering how faithful the DCU version of Diana Prince will be to her comic book roots. In the comics, she’s even taller than Superman, but since David Corenswet already stands at 6’4”, that could complicate casting.
Gunn made it clear that height isn’t the deciding factor. "I don't think extreme height is the most important factor in casting [Wonder Woman]," he said.
"That's all I said earlier as well. I never said I didn't feel good about her being taller than Superman - I just said that would never be what I considered most important in her casting."
Writer Ana Nogueira is currently at work on the script, with Gunn stressing that Diana has always been central to his plans. "I don’t know what they mean by fast-tracking," Gunn said.
"I’ve always had Wonder Woman as a priority. But we got the first few things started, and there’s some other things that are really close to green-lighting — like there’s a television show that I hope that we’re gonna be green-lighting in the next few days."
He added, "So now a little time has passed, and we really need Wonder Woman and we really need Batman, because they’re so important to us. And so it’s become a little bit more like going to everybody at DC and being like, we need to figure this out.
“We have good writers on Wonder Woman and we just have to make sure it’s working and they have to not be somebody who’s gonna take two years to write a script."
Gunn also teased more of the Charlton Comics lineup making their way into the DCU. When asked about characters like the original Blue Beetle, Captain Atom, and The Question, Gunn told fans they “might be in luck.” He even singled out Batwoman as a favorite, suggesting that she could have a role in future projects.
With so much in the works, from Peacemaker’s evolving storylines to Wonder Woman finally taking shape, Gunn seems to be enjoying building out the DCU piece by piece.
