James Gunn Shuts Down Rumor That TEEN TITANS Movie Is Being Directed by EUPHORIA Creator Sam Levinson

The DC rumor machine spun up hard this week after reports started making the rounds claiming that Sam Levinson, the creator of Euphoria, was in talks to direct DC Studios’ upcoming Teen Titans movie.

Fans immediately started debating whether Levinson’s dark and chaotic storytelling style would fit the young superhero team, but it turns out the whole thing was built on shaky ground.

DC Studios co-head James Gunn stepped in personally to clear things up. The rumor started after Geek Nation posted: “According to an insider, Sam Levinson (Euphoria) is in negotiations to direct the Teen Titans movie,” and the story quickly spread across social media after popular DC fan account GunnVerse shared it on Instagram.

It didn’t take long for Gunn to respond on Threads when a fan asked him directly about Levinson’s supposed involvement with the project. Gunn flat-out denied it, saying:

"No, it's not true. Not talking to any directors quite yet.” He also threw a little extra shade at the original report, adding: "This 'insider' isn't inside much,"

That response pretty much slammed the brakes on the speculation immediately. This also isn’t the first time Gunn has had to jump online and swat away rumors surrounding Teen Titans. Last year he addressed the flood of supposed “leaks” by telling fans:

"Anything you've heard about that movie [Teen Titans] is made up or a guess. No one in the world knows anything about the concept for the story except four people."

Even though the Levinson rumor turned out to be nonsense, fans are actually taking Gunn’s response as a good sign because it confirms the project is still alive inside DC Studios.

The Teen Titans movie was first announced in 2024, with Supergirl writer Ana Nogueira attached to write the screenplay. Since then, updates have been scarce, and the project still doesn’t have a director or cast attached.

What makes the movie especially interesting is that Gunn and DC have a massive roster of characters to pull from. The Titans lineup has changed constantly throughout DC Comics history, featuring heroes like Wonder Girl, Kid Flash, Blue Beetle, and more.

Of course, most fans still associate the team with the classic animated lineup of Robin, Cyborg, Raven, Beast Boy, and Starfire thanks to the hugely popular Teen Titans animated series and Teen Titans Go!

At this point, nobody outside Gunn’s inner circle seems to know which version of the team will make it to the big screen.

While Teen Titans is still deep in development, the larger DCU rollout keeps moving forward. Following the release of Superman, DC’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters continues expanding with Milly Alcock leading Supergirl this summer, while Clayface is set to bring some horror flavor to the franchise with a Halloween season release. HBO’s Lanterns series is also on the way as Gunn and Peter Safran continue shaping the new DC universe.

For now, though, fans waiting for Teen Titans will have to keep being patient.
