James Gunn and Peter Safran Provide DC Film and TV Project Updates: Current ‘Gods & Monsters’ Roadmap

James Gunn and Peter Safran are two years into their roles as the co-CEOs of DC Studios, and they are are in the middle of developing their ambitious plan for an interconnected DC Cinematic Universe. Dubbed “Gods & Monsters,” their roadmap aims to unify film and TV under a single creative vision.

Gunn and Safran recently hosted a press conference at Warner Bros. to outline what’s ahead. Their long-term plan is to deliver two live-action films and one animated feature per year, alongside two live-action and two animated series for Max.

However, for 2025, only one series is confirmed—Peacemaker Season 2, premiering in August.

Safran said: “We’ve unified the brand, greenlit five theatrical films, made three live-action series, and produced five animated series. We’ve also acquired and distributed a BAFTA and PGA-winning documentary.”

He added: “The DC brand was being defined by different creative teams at the company, and each was pursuing their own distinct vision of the characters, the stories, and it left very little room to collaborate or crossover, so it wasn’t one DCU, but many.

“Ultimately this fracture proved very challenging for consumers and chipped away at the very identity of our brand. So, this is part what brought us to DC Studios, bringing a sense of unity, cohesion, consistency to this universe, not only makes sense to us as storytellers, but it has to be the future of the DC brand. People want to see these iconic characters interacting, they want to experience this timeless IP as one.”

Gunn teased: “I know what my basic plan is over the next six years.”

DC Studios is moving full steam ahead with its vision, and here’s what’s coming:

THEATRICAL FILMS

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

Craig Gillespie is directing, with House of the Dragon’s Milly Alcock leading as Supergirl. Production is already halfway complete, and the film is locked in for a June 26, 2026 release.

Clayface

A Clayface movie is officially happening, with Matt Watkins in talks to direct and a script from filmmaker Mike Flanagan. Safran teased: “Clayface isn’t widely known as Penguin or Joker, but we think his story is as deeply resonant, thrilling, and even more terrifying.” Filming is expected to start this summer, targeting a September 11, 2026 release, a post-Labor Day slot where Warner Bros. has seen success with It and The Nun.

The Batman: Part II

Matt Reeves is still refining the script, but Gunn and Safran are already impressed with what they’ve seen. Production is expected to begin in late 2025, with a release set for October 1, 2027.

Batman: Brave and the Bold

This separate Batman project, directed by Andy Muschietti, is in development with a script on the way. “We have a writer, but we don’t want to name him yet—it puts too much pressure on the guy,” they said. This film will introduce Batman’s son, Damian Wayne, and draw from Grant Morrison’s Batman run.

SGT Rock

With Daniel Craig stepping away, DC Studios is hunting for a new lead. Safran confirmed: “What we love about SGT Rock is the opportunity to tell a story about heroism and conflict in a compelling and unique way. Justin [Kuritzkes] wrote a wonderful screenplay, and that’s what catapulted the project to the forefront.” Filming could start this summer if the right actor is found.

Swamp Thing

James Mangold remains attached to direct, but the project’s progress depends on his schedule. “The ball is really in his court,” Safran noted.

Teen Titans

Ana Nogueira has delivered a promising script. “Ana turned over an amazing script to us. She’s fiddling with that now. It’s definitely not a finished script,” Safran shared.

The Authority

Though announced two years ago, The Authority is taking longer to develop. Gunn admitted: “It’s the one that got messed with through all of the other things that were happening. The script had a harder time coming along.” Safran added, “It’s a very big movie, if you’re going to do it properly.” Some elements may connect with Superman and other upcoming films.

Deathstroke & Bane?

Matthew Orton is rumored to be penning a script centered on Deathstroke and Bane, but Gunn and Safran wouldn’t confirm. “Still waiting on Orton’s draft,” they said.

TV PROJECTS

Peacemaker Season 2

Gunn’s critically acclaimed series returns in August 2025.

Waller

Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller spinoff is still on track despite development hurdles caused by last year’s strikes.

Lanterns

The highly anticipated Green Lantern series is confirmed to premiere in early 2026.

The Penguin Season 2

No official confirmation yet. “There’s a lot of moving pieces, including Colin [Farrell] himself,” Safran explained.

Paradise Lost

Described as a Game of Thrones-style story about Themyscira, home of the Amazons. No updates on a writer.

Booster Gold

A series about a time-traveling loser-turned-superhero is still in play. “We love Booster Gold. There was a particular showrunner/creator we were waiting on. We waited a really long time, but he ultimately fell out of love. We pivoted. It’s moving forward with somebody else,” Safran said.

Blue Beetle Animated Series

An animated follow-up to the 2023 film is close to getting a greenlight. “Angel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer are getting to a place where they’re going to present for a greenlight really soon. It follows the events of that movie.”

While some projects are further along than others, DC’s “Gods & Monsters” slate is taking shape. The vision is clear, and fans can expect a steady flow of DC content across film and TV. Now it’s just a matter of seeing if it all comes together the way Gunn and Safran have envisioned.
