James Gunn Talks THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD Delay and Why Critics Haven't Seen All of PEACEMAKER Season 2

Fans have been eagerly waiting for any solid updates on The Brave and the Bold, but the project continues to linger in development limbo. Now, James Gunn is shedding light on what's causing the delay, while also explaining why critics only received five of the eight episodes of Peacemaker Season 2 for review.

As DC Studios approaches its three-year mark, fans are growing impatient with the lack of momentum behind their first Batman movie set in the new DCU. Batman has always been DC's biggest icon, so you’d think a film featuring him and Robin would be a top priority.

But things haven’t exactly been smooth sailing, especially with The Flash director Andy Muschietti attached to direct. Gunn once called The Flash "one of the greatest superhero movies ever made," but audience and critical reactions didn’t exactly back that up.

Muschietti himself has been unclear on where The Brave and the Bold stands, and Gunn recently spoke with Screen Rant to explain why things are taking so long:

"We'll have to see what we're doing with Batman, and [figure] that out. So obviously we know some basics about where it's going with Batman, but we’re also figuring some things out, so everything's fluid."

It sounds like DC is still working to lock down a unique and fresh take on the Dark Knight that doesn’t retread old ground, especially with Matt Reeves pushing forward on The Batman: Part II in the Elseworlds corner of the multiverse.

Despite juggling multiple DCU projects like Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker Season 2, Gunn’s still deep in the weeds on The Brave and the Bold. The film is intended to adapt Grant Morrison’s Batman run, focusing on Bruce Wayne discovering he has a son, Damian, who he takes on as Robin.

In the interview, Gunn also explained why critics haven’t been given access to the full second season of Peacemaker:

"I am the one who's keeping the three episodes away from everybody because there are too many surprises in those last three episodes. Especially 6 and 8, they are just crazy, my favourite things I've ever done of anything."

That certainly sets high expectations. Fans are already speculating that these surprises could tie directly into the bigger picture of the DCU. There’s chatter that Peacemaker might tease major players like The Circle, who are rumored to be the villains of Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.

As for what’s next with Batman, Gunn didn’t offer much more beyond this:

"There's really no new updates. I mean, we're working on a script. We have a screenwriter who's hammering away at it. I'm very involved, and so, you know, we'll see what happens next. I wish I had more news for you, but I don't."

When asked about the possibility of Robert Pattinson’s Batman joining the DCU, Gunn gave a firm but noncommittal answer:

"It would be a consideration. We’d have to think about it. We’d have to think about it. It is not like we’ve never discussed it. I would never say zero [chance], because you just never know. But it’s not likely. It’s not likely at all."

So for now, we’re still waiting for a real breakthrough on The Brave and the Bold. In the meantime, Peacemaker Season 2 looks like it’s hiding something wild in its final three episodes. Stay tuned, because Gunn definitely isn’t done surprising us.
