James Gunn Teases a Sinister DC Villain in SUPERMAN With a New Set Photo
James Gunn dropped another new image from Superman, and it’s our clearest look yet at María Gabriela de Faría as the villain known as The Engineer. The character is a key player in DC’s The Authority, and lays lifeless on the ground in a stadium. This is likely the same location from the teaser trailer where Superman throws down with Ultraman.
Gunn shared the image with the following message: “Happy Anniversary to the Engineer, created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, who you can see played to sinister perfection by puppy in human form Gaby de Faria in #Superman this July!”
Fans first caught glimpses of de Faría’s character in the teaser trailer, where she was seen walking beneath a LuthorCorp sign. Now, with confirmation that she’ll be in the same space as Ultraman, it seems likely that The Engineer is tied to Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult).
The Engineer aka Angela Spica has a body infused with nanotechnology, allowing her to shapeshift into various mechanical forms. In the comics, she’s a crucial member of The Authority, a team of morally gray superheroes whose methods often clash with traditional heroism.
The Engineer is just one of many DC figures woven into the Superman story. The film also introduces Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, a cocky Green Lantern who teams up with Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl and Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific. These character are said to be working for Sean Gunn’s Maxwell Lord.
Superman will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas.
“He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
"It's set in a world very different from ours and far removed from the DCEU. Heroes have been around for ages, and we'll see how it affected this world's history and has shaped the DCU."
Superman also stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane; Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen; Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher; and Terence Rosemore as Otis.
Superman flies into theaters on July 11.
