James Gunn Teases an Unannounced DC Film Project, and It’s His Favorite Yet

When James Gunn and Peter Safran unveiled their initial DCU slate, they revealed projects like Creature Commandos, Swamp Thing, Superman, Supergirl: World of Tomorrow, and more. Since then, new projects have been revealed including Clayface and Sgt. Rock, while others remain on the back burner. But according to Gunn, his personal favorite project hasn’t even been announced yet.

At a recent DC Studios press event, Gunn reflected on the initial slate and whether he had any regrets. While acknowledging minor missteps, he dropped a major tease about the future of DCU and another project he’s working on.

Gunn said: “I mean, life is complicated. There’s always little things. Like I wish I did that differently. I wish I asked David (David Corenswet) to do that take differently, it’s just like little things.

“There’s writers that we put on projects that I wish we didn’t, but overall, I feel just so lucky. I mean, the fact that, Ana (Nogueira) was on Supergirl, came out with this great script.

“The fact that there’s another… my favorite project nobody even knows about yet. It’s been my favorite project for a few months. Nobody even knows it.”

Gunn's revelation hints at something big in development. Safran, shared similar sentiments about the studio’s progress, despite the challenges they faced.

“As hard as we are on ourselves, if two years ago, when we all sat in this room together, we said, this will be your output two years from now, I think we would have been surprised that we could accomplish that much.

“Particularly with the five months of pencils down in our first year, they were always really problematic for everybody. So I think we feel pretty good (about the future).”

Gunn is currently deep in the writing process, confirming that his next directorial project is already in motion. “I’m writing something else now that would be the next directing thing,” he revealed. “It’s connected, without saying exactly what it is.”

When pressed on whether this mystery script is Superman 2, Gunn kept things vague: “I didn’t say that (it’s not Superman 2).”

While speculation is bound to run wild, one thing is clear—this marks Gunn’s first new DCU movie script since wrapping Superman, and it’s something he’s clearly excited about.

He also addressed the shift in his workload since taking over DC Studios, admitting that the breakneck pace of his first year was unsustainable.

He said: “The first year I wrote, I think, 650 pages, and the next year I filmed 650 pages. I can’t do it again. I really, I just can’t.”

That initial sprint saw him writing Superman, mapping out the broader Gods and Monsters chapter, and developing stories for Creature Commandos, Waller, and Peacemaker Season 2.

Now, with additional creatives like Drew Goddard, Jeremy Slater, Christina Hodson, Christal Henry, and comic book writer Tom King in the mix, Gunn can put more focus on this mystery project that he’s so pump up about, and I can’t wait to see what it is.
