James Gunn Would Love Margot Robbie to Play Harley Quinn Again, but the Actress Wants to Pass the Torch

Margot Robbie was such a fantastic actress to take on the role of Harley Quinn. Regardless of some of the material she had to work with, she was so much fun to watch play this iconic DC character. The big question is, will we get to see her play Quinn again one day?

James Gunn was recently asked about his plans for Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, and he explained that while he would love to work with her again, there are currently no plans in place. He said:

"I haven't talked to Margot about Harley for a long time. But I'd love to work with her again as Harley or as someone else. There are no plans at this time for anyone else to play Harley (I mean, other than in Todd's movie or the animated show/s.)"

Robbie has been pushing for a Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy movie for years, and she and Gunn have discussed ideas in the past. In a previous interview, the actress explained that she was ready to jump back into the role of Harley Quinn again, saying:

"I've had enough of a break. I'm ready to do her again. I did Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad back-to-back, so that was a lot of Harley all in a one-year period, but that was a while ago now. I'm always ready for more Harley!"

Her tone has changed since then, though, and now it seems like she’s ready to move on from the character and pass it on to another actress. During an interview with Forbes, Robbie said:

"I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters. That was always the dream for her."

That makes sense to me. I think it’s fine for other actresses to take on the role of Harley Quinn! But, I would still love to see Robbie back in the role for one more great Harley Quinn movie. Robbie went on to say:

"Harley's so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else's hands, and it's like, 'What are they going to do with her?' The options are endless."

The next actress to play Harley Quinn is Lady Gaga, but the Joker films are outside of the DCU that Gunn and Peter Safran are building. When it comes to a Harley Quinn within the DCU, there’s no doubt we’ll see her, we just don’t know who exactly will be playing her.

If Robbie doesn’t return to play Quinn, what other actress would you like to see take her on?
