James Mangold Shuts Down "Trolling A-Holes" Spreading INDIANA JONES 5 Rumors for Clicks
There have been rumors spreading online for months regarding Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny alleging that Phoebe Waller-Bridge will be taking over the Indiana Jones franchise from Harrison Ford after the movie. Some of these rumors involve time travel and Indiana Jones sacrificing himself in the past to save the future type stuff. Those rumors started spreading more after the trailer was released.
The film’s director James Mangold is fed up with the rumors and misinformation and recently lashed out at the “trolling a-holes” who are spreading them for clicks. He said:
“One more time. No one is ‘taking over’ or replacing Indy or donning his hat, nor is he being ‘erased’ through some contrivance. And he never was, not in any cut or script — but trolls will troll — that’s how they get their clicks.”
He went on to say:
“And please don’t exhaust me [by] pointing out how once in a while a troll is ‘right.’ Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then. All one has to do is look at set photos and interviews and you get enough info to make wild guesses about a movie plot.”
Mangold didn’t stop there and continued:
“The difference between trolling a-holes and everyone else is they [are] trying to make [money] off your feelings about other films and culture war politics. They push controversial guesses as coming from ‘sources’ to gin up clicks. Let it go.”
The creative team has been saying from the very beginning that no one is replacing Indiana Jones. But, it didn’t help the situation when it was announced that Disney and Lucasfilm were looking to develop an Indiana Jones series and possible spinoff films for Disney+. If they did move forward with anything like that, it would have to include Ke Huy Quan’s Short Round!
The story is set 1969, and Indiana Jones is “living against the backdrop of the space race – but the American effort to beat the Russians to the moon brings with it some uncomfortable truths for Indy.” Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) is taking on the role of the goddaughter of Harrison Ford’s iconic adventurer. It’s explained:
“The simple fact is that the moon-landing program was run by a bunch of ex-Nazis. How ‘ex’ they are is the question. And it gets up Indy’s nose…” Pitching Indiana – a man always looking to the secrets of the Earth rather than the stars – into the era of the astronaut finds him even more a man out of time. “It’s not just that the model of what a hero is has completely changed. It’s not just that they’re looking for something where there’s nothing up there – it’s like Reno without the gambling, or whatever his line is. But the people that are behind it are, you know, his sworn enemies.”
The film comes from producer Steven Spielberg and it also stars Mads Mikkelsen (Another Round), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), Shaunette Renée Wilson (The Resident), and Thomas Kretschmann (Avengers: Age Of Ultron).
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny open in theaters June 30, 2023 from Disney.
