James Marsden Says Fans Will Be “Blown Away” by Marvel's AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY
Marvel fans are already bracing themselves for something massive with Avengers: Doomsday, and now James Marsden is adding fuel to that fire. The actor is officially stepping back into the visor of Scott Summers, aka Cyclops, for the first time in nearly twenty years, and he’s saying that the Russo Bros. are swinging big.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Marsden didn’t hold back his excitement, even while carefully toeing the Marvel secrecy line. When asked if the film will deliver what X-Men fans have been waiting for, he said:
"Yes, of course," before adding, "I mean, I've also been trained not to speak too much about this particular project, but of course you can count on being blown away, seeing so many new things, and the Russo Brothers upping the ante and Marvel just giving everyone what they want."
Marsden last played Cyclops in X-Men: The Last Stand, where Scott Summers met his brutal end at the hands of Jean Grey. At the time, it felt like a full stop for the character. But, it seems something explosive is coming with the character.
Marvel has already given fans a taste of Cyclops’ return with one of the film’s four teaser spots. It’s a heavy moment. Scott drops to his knees, screaming into the sky as the X-Mansion lies in ruins behind him. Just pure devastation. It’s a striking image and a clear signal that Avengers: Doomsday isn’t pulling any punches.
Marsden won’t be stepping back into this chaos alone. The film brings together a serious X-Men reunion, including Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique.
The teasers haven’t focused only on the X-Men either. Marvel has also released previews centered on Steve Rogers, Thor and his adopted daughter, and the Wakandans, with a surprise Fantastic Four appearance sneaking into the mix.
It all points to a movie that’s juggling multiple corners of the Marvel universe and letting them crash together in ways we haven’t seen before.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18.
