James Wan Says AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM Will Be "a Very Standalone Film"

After The Flash bombed at the box office, fans are expecting DC’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom to bomb as well. If a movie that brought Michael Keaton’s Batman back into action can’t have a successful box office run, how will this Aquaman sequel?

Now, the first movie did make over a billion dollars at the box office, but there have been a lot of reports about how bad the movie actually is, and insiders have said that an initial cut of it was unwatchable.

In an effort to help salvage the movie and encourage fan support, director James Wan wants fans to know that this movie is not connected by anything from the past DCEU films and that it’s a standalone film. During a recent interview with CB, he said:

“Well, ‘Aquaman’ – even the first film – has always been a very standalone film. That was always our approach: that it kind of lives in its own world, and that’s kind of how we’ve approached ‘The Lost Kingdom’ as well.”

I guess it’s good to hear that Jason Momoa’s film will stand on its own and that it will tell a story that won’t tie to anything other than the first movie. But, I’ll be honest, I’m not really expecting much from this movie. But, maybe it will be better than what I’ve heard.

I’ve seen a bit of footage from the Aquaman sequel already, and while it looks like it will deliver something that’s on par with the first one, it’s hard to judge from the little footage that we’ve seen. It’s not like the studio is going to show anything bad!

In the film: “When an ancient power is unleashed, Aquaman must forge an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally to protect Atlantis, and the world, from irreversible devastation.”

The film will also see the return of Patrick Wilson as Orm, Amber Heard as Mera, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, and Randall Park as Stephen Shin. Game of Thrones alum Pilou Asbaek has also joined the cast in an unknown role, while Jani Zhao will play the new character Stingray, Indya Moore will play Karshon, and Vincent Regan will play Atlan.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to be released in theaters on December 20th. James Gunn and Peter Safran have their work cut out for them in trying to win back the trust of fans.
