Jason Momoa’s Lobo Makes a Great First Impression in SUPERGIRL Test Screenings

Fresh information from recent test screenings of Supergirl has shed more light on the movie and, more specifically, how Jason Momoa makes his long-awaited DCU debut as the galaxy’s most infamous bounty hunter, Lobo.

While reactions to the film overall sound mostly positive, the real chatter online keeps circling back to Momoa’s performance and how his anti-hero fits into Kara Zor-El’s story.

The first test screening for the film took place earlier this week, and while viewers reportedly enjoyed the experience, there’s a sense the movie may need a bit of tuning before it hits theaters next summer.

Some feedback points to an underwhelming villain in Krem of the Yellow Hills and a muted color palette that doesn’t fully capture the striking look of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow artist Bilquis Evely’s comic artwork. That said, test screenings exist for exactly this reason, and there’s still time for adjustments.

What hasn’t drawn much criticism is the cast. Early reactions consistently highlight Milly Alcock and Momoa as standout performers, with Alcock reportedly nailing Kara Zor-El’s mix of vulnerability and fury. Momoa, meanwhile, seems to have made an immediate impression as Lobo.

According to a recent leak from @MyTimeToShineH, Lobo plays a supporting role in the movie, crossing paths with Supergirl while he’s in the middle of a bounty hunt. The two end up working together, and Momoa is said to be “amazing in the role.” While it doesn’t sound like Lobo dominates the story, his presence clearly leaves an impact.

DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has also weighed in on why Momoa was the right choice, even after his time as Aquaman in the previous DC era. “Well, it's Jason Momoa. Talk about a great fit. In real life, he is Lobo, so it's a perfect fit.”

Safran went on to add, “You kind of want actors that are volunteers, and not recruits, and he was volunteering to be Lobo. He just wanted to do it. He came in, we shot in England, and he just crushed it. He brought exactly what he wanted to it. And he made it his own, as well.”

Momoa himself has been open about how personal this role is for him. He previously called Lobo “the role I've always wanted to play,” and shared his excitement and nerves about stepping into the character.

“That’s the comic I loved, so I'm really nervous about it. It’s kind of a no-brainer to play this character. It's pretty big. I don't want to give away too much, but I mean, we look pretty dead on, exactly like the character, and he’s pretty rough and gruff and I'll say the bike’s really cool.”

Supergirl is directed by Craig Gillespie from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira. The film also stars Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham.

The story follows Kara after a ruthless enemy hits painfully close to home, pushing her into an uneasy alliance with an unexpected companion as she embarks on a brutal, interstellar quest for justice and revenge.

Alcock’s Supergirl and Momoa’s Lobo could end up being a seriously cool pairing when Supergirl arrives in theaters on June 26, 2026.
