Jenna Ortega Says SCREAM 6 Will Be Action and Gore Heavy and Sidney Prescott Will Be Referenced

Scream 6 is in post-production and fans of the franchise have been curious about what this next film will bring us as it’s going to have some big changes. First and foremost, Neve Campbell is not returning to play Sidney Prescott because she was undervalued. It sucks that she won’t be returning, but I understand why she didn’t come back. The other change is that the story is set in New York City instead of Woodsboro, which is the first in the franchise.

Jenna Ortega plays Tara Carpenter in the new Scream films, and while talking with Entertainment Tonight she teased some details about the movie. When asked about Campbell’s choice to not be a part of the project, she said:

“I feel like I can’t really speak too much on that just because it’s not necessarily my character. But I will say there’s so much going on in this next one, that it’s so action-heavy and so gore-heavy that I think you’re gonna be distracted almost.

“But it’s very clear, like, there’s references to Sidney, of course. You know, it’s nice because there’s still a protectiveness in the script and that’s something that the actors had naturally over her because obviously we respect her and we want the best for her. She’s missed and thought of.”

So, she confirms here that at least Sidney will be referenced in the film, but producers should have just paid her what she’s worth to be a part of it. That would have been the better option. I also want to point out her comment on the movie being action-heavy and gore-heavy, which I’m sure fans will appreciate. She previously teased this by saying:

“Ghostface gets a lot more intimidating. I just read part of the script, and it just gets more and more gory. I think that this is probably the most aggressive and violent version of Ghostface we’ve ever seen, which I think will really be fun to shoot.”

Scream 6 star Melissa Barrera also previously talked about why this move is actually a leg up for the killer, despite the idea it may be harder to find what you’re looking for in a huge, crowded city, saying:

"It's, like 20 times more mortifying. It's awful. Because you also see how, in a city like New York City, everyone is kind of doing their own thing and someone is screaming for help, and no one will come to their help. No one comes to help them, you know, like, everyone's kind of like, ‘I'm not getting into that.’ So it's mortifying, because you're chased by Ghostface, but you also see humanity and how that reacts in a situation like that. Anyway, I think I've already probably said too much."

The cast also includes Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy, Mason Gooding as Chad, Samara Weaving, Liana Liberato, Hayden Panettiere as Kirby, and Dermot Mulroney. Courteney Cox also previously confirmed her involvement.

Both Matt Bettinelli-Opin and Tyler Gillett return to direct the sixth film, along with the writers of Scream 5, James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Kevin Williamson, writer of the original first three Scream films, serves as executive producer.

Scream 6 is eyeing a theatrical release on March 31, 2023.
