John Boyega Talks ATTACK THE BLOCK 2 and Says His Adult Moses Character Is "Bloody Frickin' Dope"
Director Joe Cornish and actor John Boyega have been talking about making Attack The Block 2 for years, and fans wish they’d finally jump into it and get it done! That first film was so good; it was just such an insanely fun movie, and it’s hard not to think what these characters would be up to all these years later after the crazy experience of fighting off an alien invasion.
Boyega previously offered an update on the movie saying: “We’re quite close. We’re gettin’ there. Obviously, we don’t wanna release no dates to anybody because we wanna take care of the creative process. We have the main spine of the story, but we’re still in the lab, just making sure the story is right. Story is everything. But it won’t be too long. I’ve given them the drums to speed up the process. Hopefully soon, we’ll have an announcement for when we’ll be around London, messin’ stuff up.”
Now, in a recent interview with Total Film, the actor discussed understanding his character Moses, and how he thinks about what he’d be up to now. The adult version of the character that we’ll eventually see in the sequel he describes as being “bloody frickin' dope." He said:
"It's a character that I really understand. In creating him when I was younger, I really understand where he's at now. It's the character that's stuck with me the longest. Every year I'd think, 'I wonder what Moses is doing now.’ So I jump back in, and I think this version of Moses, if people can think about everything he's been through, is pretty darn bloody frickin' dope."
It will be interesting to see what kind of story this sequel will tell. There are no details about that yet, but Boyega did previously say that it'll take place in South London, in a version that has become gentrified Since the events of the first film. He said: "We go back and look at the locations where we shot the first movie — once dodgy areas — and we find that it's all gleaming, high-end apartments, and Starbucks.” He explained that he's "always wanted the opportunity to come back to London and shoot something big."
As for what Cornish is thinking, he explained in an interview that he wants the sequel to hit the same as classic films like Aliens and Terminator 2. He explained:
"The nice thing about the first movie was, nobody was expecting it. Nobody knew who John [Boyega] was or who I was, certainly, outside of UK comedy circles. And we put a lot of work into the first one! Obviously, I can make stuff up about aliens quite easily, but the other stuff — the aspects of reality that we folded the fantasy into — we did a lot of research for, and so we are currently doing that same thing. We have a very detailed treatment and a storyline we're very, very excited about — and when I say 'we,' I mean me and John Boyega, who [I'm co-producing the film with] and consulting very closely with — and we're doing all the research to make sure we get it right.
"This very afternoon I spent two hours interviewing someone whose life intersects with one element of the story, and when we're done here I'm gonna go home and transcribe that. So, we're doing our due diligence in building the screenplay and taking the same amount of care we took with the first one, but we're very, very quietly confident and excited about what we've got. We think about 'Alien' and 'Aliens' and 'Terminator' and 'Terminator 2,' and we wanna take a shot at doing our version of what people did for those movies."
With Cornish and Boyega continuing to talk about this sequel, hopefully, it happens! I would have been fine without a sequel, but since they constantly talk about it, I now need to see their vision for it brought to life!
