John Cena's Hilariously Unique BARBIE Movie Character Has Been Revealed
Warner Bros. recently shared some new footage from its highly-anticipated film adaptation of Barbie at CinemaCon. The new trailer they showed was filled with tons of new footage, and it gave us our best look yet the movie and what the story will entail.
The trailer also revealed that John Cena is playing a hilariously unique Ken doll. Cena is playing a merman version of Ken, which is based on Mattel’s King Ocean Ken doll. Seeing him as that character was pretty funny, and the audience in attendance laughed their asses off. He’s not the only mermaid character in the film, as Dua Lipa is also playing Mermaid Barbie.
The new footage screened sees Margot Robbie’s Barbie going through some strange changes she can’t explain, so after meeting with Kate McKinnon’s “Weird Barbie” for some answers, she finds herself heading to the real world to figure some things out. Things get really weird and meta from there, and she finds that reality is a harsh place as she is repeatedly arrested.
Director Greta Gerwig talked about the cast at the event: "These actors can do anything. They took it so seriously. The humor came from taking everything to heart and then playing it like it’s a drama. It was like watching Marlon Brando play Ken."
Ryan Gosling also spoke about his Ken, commenting that at one point, he doubted his own "Ken-ergy.” He said: "I doubt my Ken-ergy. It just came on like a fever really. Like a pink fever,"
For over 62 years, “Barbie has led girls on a path to self-discovery and helped them to imagine the possibilities. After over 180 inspirational careers, Barbie—along with her friends and family—continues to inspire and encourage the next generation of girls that they can be anything.”
The movie also stars Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Ariana Greenblatt (Love and Monsters), Issa Rae (Insecure), Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Hari Nef (Transparent), Will Ferrell (Saturday Night Live), Kingsley Ben-Adir, Helen Mirren, Ncuti Gatwa, and America Ferrera.
The movie hits theaters on July 21, 2023.
