Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni Reveal First Footage For THE MANDALORIAN & GROGU at D23
Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have started production on the Star Wars movie The Mandalorian & Grogu and they brought some early footage to show the fans at Disney’s D23 Expo presentation.
Favreau is directing the film, and he came out on stage saying, “We’re all pretty excited to have Star Wars back on the big screen.”
The director also confirmed that they just started shooting the film two weeks ago, and then added that: “It’s the last D23 before the movie comes out — we had to put something out.”
Here’s a description of the footage that was screened thanks to The Wrap:
“The footage that was screened during the presentation showed the Mandalorian (once again voiced by Pedro Pascal) on a snow planet, walking into a room and killing a bunch of snow troopers.
There was voice over from Pascal saying that, since he took Grogu on as an apprentice, he would be more selective in the assignments that he agreed to.”
Mando says in the trailer: “We’re bounty hunters by trade, now that he’s with me, I’ll be selective about my assignments.”
“Beyond that there was a shot of the Mandalorian in a spaceship with Zeb (from Star Wars: Rebels, as first introduced in The Mandalorian), a great moment where the Mandalorian and Grogu have commandeered a walker (on that same snow planet).
“They slide down an icy cliffside and, when they reach the bottom, there are the four-legged AT-AT walkers waiting to shoot at them.
“There was then a moment with the little droid mechanic guys from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (who worked on C-3PO) and who later appeared on The Mandalorian.
“It looks like a nice upscaling of the world established in The Mandalorian and the associated series.”
“We’re bounty hunters by trade, now that he’s with me, I’ll be selective about my assignments,” says Mando in a voice-over.
This is the first theatrical movie to be based off a Disney+ series and the first Star Wars film to be released since The Rise of Skywalker. Mandalorian & Grogu hits theaters in May 2026.
