Joseph Kosinski and Brad Pitt Are Determined To Make The Most Accurate and Most Impressive Formula One Movie Ever Made
Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski is currently in production on his next film, which is a Formula One racing movie starring Brad Pitt. The actor plays a seven-time world champion Formula One race driver that comes out of retirement to race again and to also mentor a promising rookie.
It was recently revealed that Pitt will actually be driving a real race car in a real race for the film. He will be driving in the British Grand Prix. The news was revealed During the F1 Accelerate Summit in Miami, which featured Kosinski and Jerry Bruckheimer, and they said that they will be "creating an 11th team filming on track and on event from Silverstone [the track where the British Grand Prix takes place] to the end of the year."
Kosinski, Bruckheimer, and Pitt are looking to make the most accurate and impressive racing movie ever made.
Panel moderator Will Buxton said: "They've spent 18 months taking what they learnt on Top Gun Maverick to develop the smallest moveable 6k camera ever designed to take the viewer into the cockpit. A cockpit in which their stars will actually drive. That's right. Brad Pitt driving an F1 car from Silverstone onwards. The car has been designed by Mercedes and is already testing (you may have seen a video online.) As are their actors, in sim and real life. Lewis Hamilton is in daily communication and is advising on storyline and script to ensure it's the most accurate racing film ever made."
He continued, saying: "Joseph says Frankenheimer's Grand Prix is his biggest touchstone. Both he and Jerry are determined to make the most accurate, most impressive race movie anyone has ever seen. Oh. And Tom Cruise has already offered to do some extra driving if they need him."
When previously talking about the movie, Kosinski said that it’s “coming fast” and explained that they are shooting it using the techniques they learned while making Top Gun: Maverick. He said: “It’s fascinating. I can’t wait to show people behind the scenes. We’re going to be shooting on the tracks with real cars and trying to take everything I learned in Top Gun to apply to Formula One. It’ll be fun.”
He also discussed the way the film is being shot, saying: “Certainly seeing people react to an in-camera, authentically captured film like Top Gun makes us all feel good that our approach works and is appreciated by audiences.”
He went on to talk about applying that to his next film, saying: “It’s almost funny to me to see people who are so enamored with real photography. Younger people almost haven’t seen a lot of it. They’re so used to CGI [computer-generated images] being a tool of big movies that when you shoot something for real, it feels innovative. That’s exactly the approach for Formula One … to shoot at the real races and real cars and capture it. It’s going to be a huge challenge but an exciting one for me.”
The film project is being developed for Apple, but there are plans to release it in theaters.
