Josh Gad Teases His SPACEBALLS Sequel Script and Says It's Blowing People Away
Earlier this year it was announced that Josh Gad is working on a script for a sequel to Spaceballs with writers Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez (Detective Pikachu).
Gad is also producing the film alongside director Josh Greenbaum and creator Mel Brooks, and he recently finished the first draft of the script.
During an interview with Forbes, Gad talked about the script and said that everyone who has read it, has been blown away by it.
He said: “Without MGM taking me into their Culver prison cells, I can tell you that the draft is done. Everybody who’s read it has been blown away. The process of working on this with and alongside Mel Brooks has been one of the highlights of my career.”
Gad goes on to say the whole experience has been “sort of a fever dream” and said that Brooks “has been so unbelievably supportive, involved, and electrified by this because it’s the one that surprisingly got away.”
He added: “It’s a dream to be able to finally make the reality prophesied by Yogurt in the first movie happen. I can’t say more than that.
“I can’t tell you anything beyond [the] process at this point, but I can tell you every hour of every day right now is spent making this project closer and closer to reality — and I think we’re nearing the end zone here.”
Gad previously talked about the script saying that it’s “the funniest and best thing [he’s] ever worked on.”
The original 1987 sci-fi Star Wars comedy spoof follows the adventures of Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his sidekick Barf (John Candy), a half-man, half-dog creature, as they attempt to rescue Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) from the evil clutches of Dark Helmet (Moranis) and President Skroob (Brooks).
In their quest, they receive guidance from the wise and powerful Yogurt, who introduces them to "The Schwartz," a mystical power.
I’m excited to see how this turns out!
