Julia Louis-Dreyfus Says Marvel's THUNDERBOLTS* Focuses on "The Human Story"

Marvel Studios‘ Thunderbolts* star Julia Louis-Dreyfus recently talked about the upcoming film offering some insight on what fans should expect from it and the story it tells.

Louis-Dreyfus explains that the big MCU movie will be driven by grounded storytelling and that it will focus on “the human story.” She also says that the creative team are trying not to use as much CGI to make the film.

In an interview with The New York Times, Louis-Dreyfus said: “It’s very well organized. Very methodical. And I don’t mean that in a negative way. Particularly on this film, they’re very much focused on, frankly, the human story, believe it or not.”

She went on to talk about the CGI in the film saying: “They’re trying to sort of go back to their roots, as it were. And so there’s a lot of focus on that. They’re trying to stay away from as much C.G.I. or whatever as possible, so that the stunts are, like, everywhere.

“And in fact, I had to do a couple. Well, I’m making this out to sound like I’m flying through the air like Captain America or whatever, but I’m not. It’s just a very, very, very, very brief stunt.”

Louis-Dreyfus reprises her role as CIA director Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine in Thunderbolts*. She made her debut in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+ when she talked John Walker (Wyatt Russell) into dropping the Captain America persona in favor of U.S. Agent.

De Fontaine later showed up in the post-credit scene in Black Widow when she assigned Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) to eliminate Clint Barton/Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner).

Her most recent appearance was in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and there it revealed she was director of the CIA.

The cast of Thunderbolts* also includes Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Lewis Pullman as The Sentry, and Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster.

It was previously reported that Thunderbolts* is "just a Black Widow sequel the same way Civil War was a Captain America sequel... Yelena’s handling Red Room remnants and then gets sidetracked with Thunderbolts*."

The film is being directed by Jake Schreier (Paper Towns, Kidding) and was written by Eric Pearson (Thor: Ragnarok, Black Widow) and Kurt Busiek.

Thunderbolts* is currently set to be released in theaters on July 25, 2025.
