Kevin Feige Reportedly Getting “More Hands-On Than Ever” With Upcoming AVENGERS Films Amid Russo Bros. Concerns
Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige is reportedly planning to take a much more active role in overseeing the next two Avengers movies with Doomsday and Secret Wars due to internal concerns about directors Joe and Anthony Russo.
While the Russo Brothers are responsible for some of the MCU’s most acclaimed films likeThe Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War, and Endgame, their work outside the Marvel bubble hasn’t exactly wowed critics or audiences.
Their latest project, The Electric State, which was co-written by Avengers scribe Stephen McFeely, debuted on Netflix to weak viewership and a harsh critical response. The film currently sits at a dismal 15% on Rotten Tomatoes and reportedly cost over $300 million to produce.
This disappointing outcome has apparently raised some red flags inside Marvel. According to insider Daniel Richtman:
"Kevin Feige has concerns about the Russos directing the next two Avengers films. However, at this stage replacing them isn’t an option, so he plans to closely oversee the projects, ensuring the script is just right and everything stays on track. He's going to be way more hands-on than ever with them."
Considering the scale of these films and how much is riding on them, especially after a mixed post-Endgame phase—Feige’s involvement may be Marvel’s safety net.
To be fair, Feige likely knew about the Russos’ post-MCU track record when talks began, so this isn’t necessarily about panicking. It’s more about ensuring these two massive tentpoles meet the high expectations of fans and the studio alike.
The Russo Bros. haven’t made a great project after Endgame. All of their films outside of Marvel have been big-budget disappointments, and I wrote an article recently about how that’s concerning because they may have lost their mojo. But, hopefully they find it again as they jump back into the Marvel sandbox.
Filming on Avengers: Doomsday is set to begin next month in the UK, with set construction already underway.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters May 1, 2026. Secret Wars follows on May 7, 2027. Let’s hope the old Russo magic is still alive, and that Feige help shape another MCU high point.
