LANTERNS Showrunner Promises a Grounded Story Without Losing the Magic of the Source Material
The first official look at Lanterns, the upcoming HBO series set in James Gunn’s DC Cinematic Universe, has sparked plenty of discussion among fans.
With filming now underway, a new promo image was released, offering a glimpse at Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Hal Jordan and John Stewart. While the two weren’t suited up in full Green Lantern gear, the unmistakable ring of the Corps could be seen on Chandler’s finger.
Despite the anticipation surrounding Lanterns, some fans have expressed concerns about the series’ more "grounded" approach, questioning how a story about intergalactic space cops could be rooted in realism.
Showrunner and executive producer Chris Mundy has now weighed in, reassuring audiences that the show won't stray too far from its comic book roots.
“From the start, our driving force has been to deliver a layered drama – rooted in nuanced storytelling and rich world-building – that balances tension and mystery with honest, authentic emotion," Mundy stated via the WBD press site.
"The goal is to create something that feels timeless and grounded without sacrificing the magic of the source material.”
While Lanterns may take a more serious, character-driven approach, it’s clear that Mundy and his team are focused on delivering a story that stays true to what makes Green Lantern an infuential part of DC lore.
The series follows “new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”
The cast also includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan and Ulrich Thomsen as Green Lantern villain Sinestro.
Lanterns is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King. All three serve as executive producers along with James Hawes, who is also directing the first two episodes.
