LEGION Creator Noah Hawley Will Write and Direct the Next STAR TREK Film

Fargo and Legion creator Noah Hawley has signed on to write and direct the next Star Trek film for Paramount Pictures.

The last Star Trek movie that was being developed by director S.J. Clarkson ended up being shelved after Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth dropped out of the project after the studio tried to change the deal on them. According to Variety, though, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, and Zoe Saldana are expected to all return to the U.S.S. Enterprise for the new adventure.

This will serve as the fourth movie in the cinematic series, and it’s separate from the other Star Trek movie that is being developed by director Quentin Tarantino and writer Mark L. Smith (The Revenant). Apparently that project is still in the works.

There are no story details to share, but I imagine the last idea, which saw Pine and Hemsworth reprising their roles as Captain James T. Kirk and his father George Kirk, respectively, is off the table. That story would’ve centered around the two coming together somehow and embarking on an adventure.

J.J. Abrams’s Bad Robot will return to produce. As a fan of Hawley’s TV work, I’m excited to see what he ends up bringing to the Star Trek franchise. I think he’s a great choice to take on the franchise. Hawley made his feature film directorial debut on Lucy in the Sky with Natalie Portman and Jon Hamm.
