Linda Cardellini Teases Pamela Voorhees’ Dark Journey in FRIDAY THE 13TH Prequel CRYSTAL LAKE

Pamela Voorhees is coming to Crystal Lake, and this time we’re going to meet the woman before she became one of horror’s most infamous killers.

Peacock’s upcoming Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake will dig into Pamela’s life before the bloodshed fans know from the original 1980 slasher classic.

Linda Cardellini is taking on the role made famous by Betsy Palmer, and it sounds like the series is interested in exploring much more than Pamela’s eventual killing spree.

We already know where Pamela’s story is ultimately headed. Her young son Jason drowns at Camp Crystal Lake, and the devastated mother eventually responds by murdering the people she holds responsible.

But Crystal Lake has an opportunity the movies never really had: showing us Pamela and Jason before everything went horribly wrong.

That relationship was incredibly important to Cardellini when figuring out how to approach the character. Rather than trying to recreate Palmer’s memorable performance, she wanted to build the Pamela who could eventually become that woman.

Cardellini explained: “You can’t duplicate what Betsy did, which was to play this devoted mother,” Cardellini said. “So I can take that and sort of bring that to the early childhood years of Jason’s life.

“I also think that you don’t get to where Betsy is without really truly loving Jason and getting to know him. That was really important to us going in. And no, you can’t be another Betsy. But I do do a little bit of an homage with a certain sweater that makes an appearance.”

For longtime Friday the 13th fans, the sweater is a fun little connection to Palmer’s original character, but Cardellini’s comments about Pamela’s relationship with Jason are much more interesting.

It sure sounds like Crystal Lake could spend a significant amount of time with Jason as a child and show what his life with Pamela was actually like. The movies have given us the basic pieces of their tragic history, but seeing them together as mother and son could completely change how audiences view Pamela.

That doesn’t mean the show needs to turn her into some misunderstood antihero. Pamela Voorhees becomes a killer. What makes the setup interesting is the possibility of watching the emotional journey that gets her there.

If Crystal Lake establishes how deeply she loves Jason, his death could hit much harder when the story eventually reaches that point. It could also make Pamela considerably scarier.

We know what she becomes, but she doesn’t know it yet. There’s something wonderfully strange about building an entire Friday the 13th prequel around a story whose destination is already so familiar.

The mystery isn’t necessarily what Pamela does. It’s who she was before she did it, what her relationship with Jason looked like, and how Camp Crystal Lake transformed into the cursed playground horror fans have been revisiting for decades.

The series gives the creative team some room to play with the mythology, expand Jason and Pamela’s history, and potentially throw a few nasty surprises at fans who think they already know how everything fits together.

And after such a long drought for the franchise, getting a major new Friday the 13th project is exciting on its own. Jason Voorhees has spent far too much time away from the screen.

Even if Crystal Lake takes a different road toward the hockey-mask-wearing monster we know, returning to this world with Cardellini playing Pamela is a great and interesting way to get things moving again.
