MAN OF TOMORROW First Look Reveals Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor Wearing His Comic-Accurate Warsuit
James Gunn has unveiled a new look at Man of Tomorrow, giving fans their first glimpse of Nicholas Hoult suited up as Lex Luthor in a live-action version of the villain's iconic Warsuit. For comic book fans, it looks like Gunn and his team have gone all in on bringing the classic design to life.
The Warsuit was first teased in promotional artwork released when Man of Tomorrow was announced, but this is the first time we've seen Hoult actually wearing it. The armor appears to lean heavily into its comic book roots, and one of the coolest aspects is that it looks to have been built practically rather than relying entirely on CGI.
There are a couple of interesting details worth pointing out, though. The most noticeable is a transparent protective dome surrounding Lex's head. The addition gives the suit more of a high-tech space exploration vibe than a straightforward Superman-busting battle suit.
The other major reveal is the A.R.G.U.S. insignia prominently displayed on the chest armor. Earlier concept artwork featured the traditional power source design from the comics.
Lex will be working alongside Rick Flag Sr. and A.R.G.U.S. in Man of Tomorrow. That partnership explains how Lex finds himself back in action after nearly leveling Metropolis. It also suggests the Warsuit was developed using A.R.G.U.S. resources and technology rather than whatever remains of LuthorCorp.
Gunn previously opened up about the direction of the sequel and how it differs from Superman, syaing: "The story in Man of Tomorrow, it is slightly tonally different from Superman.
“Superman’s more comic-booky in some ways than Man of Tomorrow, and it has to do with the dual characters of Lex and Superman at the center of Man of Tomorrow and other things."
He went on to explain why Lex has become such a fascinating character for him to explore: "I think I'm just more interested in getting into the heart of Lex and seeing how he fits into all of this.
“I think getting to know more of Lex as a human being. I think we saw a lot about the evil part of Lex. He's pretty evil. I think he, as a character, is really interesting. There's something, despite everything, that is incredibly heroic about Lex."
Gunn also shared what he finds compelling about Superman's greatest enemy: "Take aside morality, which is hard to do, but here is this guy who’s saying, 'You can hold up a building.
“You can shoot down planes with your eyes. F*** you, I'm going to kick your ass because I'm better than you.’ I can't help but admire his tenacity and his ego," Gunn admitted. "I mean, his ambition is beyond compare."
The movie will see Superman and Lex Luthor entering unfamiliar territory as they're forced to work together against Brainiac, a threat powerful enough to endanger not only Metropolis but the entire world.
Written and directed by Gunn, Man of Tomorrow stars David Corenswet as Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Lars Eidinger as Brainiac, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific.
The cast has also expanded with Andre Royo, Matthew Lillard, Sinqua Walls, and Adria Arjona. Man of Tomorrow flies into theaters on July 9, 2027.
