Mark Hamill Offers Instruction on How He Does His Joker Laugh
Mark Hamill’s version of The Joker, which was introduced to us in Batman: The Animated Series, is a favorite among DC fans. He set a high bar for all the actors that would play The Clown Prince of Crime after him. One of the signature elements that Hamill brought to the character is that awesomely maniacal laugh.
Over the years, Hamill is frequently asked by fans to recreate the iconic laugh during conventions and panels that he’s a part of. Well, now, Hamill offers a little instruction on how it’s done. In a recent Wired Autocomplete interview, the actor shared:
"I get asked to this. I'll be in the grocery store. It could be Toys "R" Us. 'Do the laugh. Do the laugh" Well, first of all you have to warm up. It's like a car engine. If you just rip, it'll hurt your throat. And plus, there's no subtle way to do it. So, I'm standing in a Toys "R" Us laughing maniacally and people are like, casting me worried looks like, 'What's that old man doing to that poor 10-year-old kid?' But I get asked to do it a lot."
You can watch him do it at the 2:26 mark in the video below:
Hamill previously talked about his future as The Joker and said that he “doubts he'll ever take up the role again without Conroy there to trade lines with.” He said:
“They would call and say, ‘They want you to do the Joker.’ And my only question was, ‘Is Kevin Batman?’ If they said yes, I would say, ‘I’m in.’ We were like partners. We were like Laurel and Hardy. Without Kevin there, there doesn’t seem to be a Batman for me.”
Conroy and Hamill were with each other every step of the way with these characters over the course of 30 years. It’s kinda sad that we’ll never see Hamill voice the character again. Who knows, though, maybe one day it’ll happen again.
