Mark Ruffalo Says It Would Be Too Expensive to Make a Standalone Hulk Movie

Marvel fans have wondered if Marvel Studios would ever make a standalone Hulk movie. This has been talked about for years, especially during The Infinity Saga run of films, but at that time, Marvel couldn’t do it because Universal Pictures had certain rights to the character. That’s no longer the case, so if Marvel wanted to make a solo Hulk film, they could do that. But, Mark Ruffalo doesn’t think it’ll happen because it will be too expensive.

During an interview with GQ, the actor was asked about what his future for Hulk looks like in the MCU, and he said:

“I’d love to do a standalone Hulk, I just don’t think that’s ever going to happen. It’s very expensive if you did a whole movie, which is why they use the Hulk so sparingly. I priced myself out!”

Let’s be honest, though, Marvel could make a Hulk movie happen if they wanted to. Would it really cost over $150 million to make a Hulk movie!? I honestly think they could do it for much less! It’s not like we haven’t seen other Hulk solo movies made before. I don’t know what Ruffalo is talking about.

The last time we saw Ruffalo as Hulk was at the end of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, where he showed up with his son, Skaar. A lot of fans believe this sets up World War Hulk, and that would be a really interesting a cool direction to go. One thing we know for sure is that we haven’t seen the last of Hulk.

It was reported a few months ago that Marvel is developing a solo Hulk film, and that the character might also appear in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Not long after that rumor started spreading, Marvel asked Ruffalo not to comment on a standalone Hulk movie.

Ruffalo also commented on criticisms he received from peers about joining the MCU in the first place. He said he’s “heard it a lot from my peers” about “giving his prime acting years to playing a comic book hero” was not the best career move. His response to that is: “Sometimes I think it’s jealousy, a little bit because then I see them run off and do it.”

He went on to talk about one actor that he met with who was considering joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor had some questions for Ruffalo, and one of those questions was, “You know, man, aren’t you worried no big directors are going to want to work with you?”

Ruffalo went on to say: “I’m really proud of it. I’ve sat in movie theaters with the movies I’ve done with big directors. I’ve also experienced these Marvel movies with an audience and the amount of community and expression… it touched every single emotion. That means something to me. I don’t look down on it.”
