Marvel Is Reportedly Casting the MCU’s Next Wolverine, but He May Skip the X-MEN Reboot
Marvel Studios may already be hunting for the MCU’s next Wolverine, but Logan’s return could happen somewhere other than the upcoming X-Men movie.
A new rumor claims Marvel is currently casting an actor to take over the Wolverine role, which immediately raises one very big question: Where exactly is he going to show up?
With Hugh Jackman’s recent return putting the character back in the spotlight, Marvel introducing its long-term Wolverine is going to be a pretty major moment for the MCU.
According to scooper MyTimeToShineHello, Marvel is “casting the MCU Wolverine but NOT for what you think,” with no further details offered about the mystery project.
Naturally, that opens the door to plenty of possibilities. Wolverine could potentially make his MCU debut in Avengers: Secret Wars before joining his fellow mutants elsewhere, or Marvel could be preparing the character for a standalone Wolverine movie during Phase 7.
There’s also a chance Marvel simply wants Logan ready for another project before eventually bringing him into the X-Men franchise. There’s another recent report claiming Wolverine won’t be part of Marvel’s first X-Men movie.
According to the X account DoomsServant, Beast, Angel, and Jubilee are expected to appear in the film. Kitty Pryde and Iceman are reportedly still uncertain, while Gambit, Polaris, Wolverine, and Colossus aren’t expected to be included.
None of this has been confirmed by Marvel Studios, so the rumored character lineup and Wolverine casting should be treated accordingly. We do, however, already know several actors who will be joining Marvel’s new generation of mutants.
At D23 Expo, Marvel confirmed Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Scott Summers, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Maya Boyd as Storm. Adam Driver was also announced as Mister Sinister.
Wolverine was noticeably absent from those announcements. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has indicated that more casting news is still coming, so there are plenty of characters left to reveal.
Whether a new version of Logan eventually joins the X-Men roster or gets introduced somewhere else first remains one of the bigger questions surrounding Marvel’s mutant plans.
Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing the first X-Men movie leave Wolverine on the sidelines. Logan has been such a huge part of the franchise on the big screen that giving Jean Grey, Cyclops, Storm, Rogue, and the rest of the team some room to establish themselves could be a good move. Wolverine can always come crashing into their lives later.
It would also give Marvel an opportunity to make the arrival of its new Wolverine feel like an event rather than simply dropping him into an already crowded ensemble.
X-Men is being directed by Jake Schreier, with Lee Sung Jin, Joanna Calo, and Michael Lesslie serving as writers. The movie is currently scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2028.
