Marvel Studios Shares a Synopsis For ETERNALS

I’m curious to see how Marvel’s upcoming film Eternals turns out. The fan reaction to it has been interesting as some are excited about the movie, while others aren’t really showing any interest. I’m sure that will all change when a trailer is released that blows people’s minds.

While we wait for the trailer to eventually come, Marvel has released a synopsis for the film that pretty much confirms everything we’ve heard about the movie so far. The synopsis reads:

Marvel Studios' The Eternals features an exciting new team of Super Heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ancient aliens who have been living on Earth in secret for thousands of years. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, an unexpected tragedy forces them out of the shadows to reunite against mankind's most ancient enemy, The Deviants.

In the comics, The Eternals were sent to Earth 35,000 years ago by the Celestials to protect humankind from the Deviants. The director, Chloé Zhao, previously explained, “It’s about this group of incredible immortals, but through their journey, we really get to explore what it means to be human and humanity on our time on this planet.”

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously talked about the film and explained that it’s a big, expensive, and necessary risk for them:

"It is a very big movie. It is a very expensive movie. And we are making it because we believe in [director Chloe Zhao's] vision and we believe in what those characters can do and we believe we need to continue to grow and evolve and change and push our genre forward. That's a risk if I've ever heard one."

I’m all about seeing Marvel taking big risks to try new things as they introduce audiences to new characters. Feige also talked about the film, saying:

“Eternals are one group, but we like the idea of introducing an ensemble, doing an ensemble movie from the start, as opposed to building up as we did with the first Avengers. More like Guardians, not tonally, but in terms of introducing a new group of people. You were asking about ’60s, and ’70s before. Jack Kirby did an immense, amazing epic with Eternals that spans tens of thousands of years, and that’s also something we haven’t really done, which is why that among many other things post-Endgame, we find appealing.”

He also teased The Eternals connections to other MCU films like Guardians of the Galaxy, and said we’ll learn more about the agenda of the Celestials:

"It will be a story that will introduce you to this incredibly eclectic group of immortals, they're the focus of the story. It takes place in our universe — it takes place in the MCU, so you'll hear mentions and stuff about it but yes, the Celestials go back a long way. We know a little bit about them. The Collector told us about Celestials, Knowhere is the severed head of a Celestial. Ego was involved with them, but we learn much more about their agenda and what they've been up to."

Not much else has really been revealed about the project, but the cast includes Angelina Jolie as Thena, Gemma Chan as Sersi, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Richard Madden as Icarus, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, and Kit Harrington as an archeologist named Dane Whitman.

Eternals hits theaters on November 6th, 2020.
