Matt Reeves and James Gunn Meeting to Ensure THE BATMAN and DC Universes "Don't Crash Into Each Other"
There’s a lot going on over at Warner Bros. in regard to the future of DC movies. On top of James Gunn and Peter Safran planning a DC Cinematic Universe, The Batman director Matt Reeves is building his own Batman universe that will in no way be connected to Gunn and Safran’s plans.
During a recent interview with Collider, Reeves revealed that he will be meeting with new DC Studios bosses to go over the plans for the DC Universe and the BatVerse he’s building. He explained that the main goal is to ensure that these separate universes “don’t crash into each other” in terms of storytelling. But, at the same time, they want “to support each other.” Reeves explained:
“They [Gunn and Safran] have been great. [...] We're actually supposed to meet in the next few weeks because they want to talk to me about the broad plan, and then they want to hear the BatVerse plan. We're just getting together to talk about all of that. Look, I'm excited to hear what they're going to do. The BatVerse thing, as James has said, and as Peter has said, is kind of its own thing they're letting us do.”
Gunn and Safran are developing a 10-year plan for the DC Cinematic Universe and their plans will spam movies, TV, and video games. They will be revealing the first three years of their plan sometime this month. Gunn previously explained:
“We know we are not going to make every single person happy every step of the way. But we can promise everything we do is done in the service of the STORY & in the service of the DC CHARACTERS we know you cherish and we have cherished our whole lives.”
Reeves went on to talk about how they are looking to support each other in their efforts, but at the same time, make sure that their story plans don’t crash in the process:
“I had this dream for the way I wanted that to play out and that's part of what I'm going to be talking to them about in a few weeks. They're going to be talking to me about what they're doing in their ten-year plan or certainly what's in the near future as well so that we can understand that we're not—it's air traffic control—we don't want to be crashing into each other. We want to support each other. I'm super excited. I'm really excited to hear about what they're doing and to be working with them. It's going to be cool.”
As far as Gunn’s plans go, all we know right now is that Gunn is currently developing a Superman movie and it won’t involve Henry Cavill. There’s a good chance there will be a Batman movie involved as well. Gunn also confirmed some Elseworld movies were being developed. Reeves, however, is developing The Batman sequel and a couple of shows based on Penguin and Arkham Asylum.
The future of DC movies is going to continue to be interesting.
