Matt Reeves Opens Up About THE BATMAN PART II Script and Confirms THE PENGUIN Season 2 Talks

There’s been a lot of people wondering why The Batman Part II has been taking so long, and fans now have a recent update straight from director Matt Reeves.

In a recent conversation with The Batman’s Catwoman, Zoë Kravitz, for Variety, Reeves confirmed that work on the highly anticipated sequel is slowly progressing.

“Yeah, we’re finishing the script. We’re going to be shooting next year,” Reeves revealed, addressing months of speculation about the film’s status.

This update comes shortly after James Gunn said a first draft still hasn’t been turned in. Kravitz then praised Reeves for his meticulous approach, sharing:

“You’re an incredibly meticulous filmmaker. I just asked you how it’s going with writing ['Part II'] and you said, 'Slow,' and I think that’s a wonderful quality, because you care so much.”

Reeves elaborated on the pace of his creative process, explaining: “The thing is that for me, I feel like it’s not a choice. I always feel like I would never do it the way I’m doing it, except that that’s the only way I know how to do it.”

He went on to describe writing and filmmaking as navigating a dark room. “Everything you need is in the room, but there are no lights, and you’re on hands and knees. And when something connects, you go, 'Oh, that’s something.'”

While details about the sequel remain under wraps, fans are speculating about potential villains, with names like Hush, The Joker, The Court of Owls, and Mr. Freeze floating to the top of wish lists.

Reeves also touched on the future of HBO’s The Penguin, the incredible spin-off centered on Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb. Reeves confirmed that discussions about a second season are already underway.

“Yeah, we’re talking to [showrunner] Lauren [LeFranc] about doing another season. That was a special experience. I just feel really fortunate. These characters don’t belong to me; they belong to the world. It comes down to whether you can approach them in a way that expresses something personal.”

Considering the time it takes for Reeves’ intricately crafted Batman universe to unfold, a second season of The Penguin could help bridge the gap between The Batman Part II and its eventual sequel.

The Batman Part II is slated to hit theaters on October 2, 2026 and fans can expect another gritty, thought-provoking chapter in his “Batman Epic Crime Saga.”
