THE BATMAN Director Matt Reeves Discusses the Future of the Franchise as THE PENGUIN Series Is Coming to an End

As The Penguin series comes to a close next week, producer Matt Reeves is talking about the future of The Batman universe, which is being referred to as the Batman Epic Crime Saga.

The events of the The Penguin series are going to lead into the sequel for The Batman and we’ll have a clearer idea of what that looks like after next week’s season finale.

During a recent conversation with Andy Serkis shared in Interview Magazine, Reeves talked about what he is looking to do with the Batman franchise as a whole: “We have been talking, and it’s exciting because people are now embracing the show.

“My fantasy is coming into being, which is very exciting, and HBO has been incredibly supportive from the beginning. Now to see that the show is being embraced is really, really exciting.

“We have been talking about doing other shows. I wanted to make sure that we didn’t do the origin tale, which so many of the other series have done.

“I think the idea of being able to put a lens on these characters is a really exciting idea. It’s about cities and their dysfunction and the world and its dysfunction, which is what Batman stories are all about.

“They’re all about Gotham being a place that should be better. And you can have the experience of this almost novelistic epic crime saga, but you also just get these separate experiences.

“They have their own dramatic value. So Oz’s story is Oz’s story, and the idea is to do these other stories in the same way.”

I’ve actually enjoyed The Penguin series more than The Batman and I hope that the quality of storytelling and filmmaking will continue to get better and better as the franchise continues. The Penguin is definitely getting my more excited about what The Batman: Part II will deliver.

During a previous interview, Reeves offered some details on the sequel saying: "We've shared [the script] as we've been going along with DC, and they're super excited. It's going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption and it goes into places [Bruce Wayne] couldn't even anticipate in the first one."

He added: "What was important to me was to find a way to take these pop icons, these mythic characters that everybody knows, and translate it so that Gotham feels like a place in our world.

“We might push to the edge of fantastical, but we would never go into full fantastical. It's meant to feel quite grounded."

Reeves has a strong solid vision of what he is looking to do, and I hope he gets to take it all the way and tell every story that he wants to tell in the world of Batman.
