Mia Goth Opens Up about BLADE, Lilith, Mahershala Ali’s Vision, the Lost 1920s Setting, and What’s Really Going On

Marvel’s Blade reboot has been on a rough road of development since it was first announced. While the project has shifted directors, scripts, and even entire eras, one constant has been Mia Goth, who remains attached to play the villainous Lilith.

In a recent conversation with Josh Horowitz, the actress offered an honest look at where things stand, what she experienced behind the scenes, and just how close the original version of the movie came to happening.

When Kevin Feige stepped on stage at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019 and welcomed Mahershala Ali to the MCU, the crowd erupted. A new Blade movie sounded like a slam dunk. Since then, the project has cycled through release dates ranging from November 2023 to November 2025 before eventually being pulled from Marvel’s schedule entirely.

Directors Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange have both been attached at different points, while writers Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Beau DeMayo, Michael Starrbury, Nic Pizzolatto, Michael Green, and Eric Pearson each took their turn shaping a script.

What originally included a 1920s setting and a team-up with Dane Whitman was later tossed out as the studio reworked the movie from scratch.

Goth didn’t pretend to have answers. Instead, she made it clear that she’s just as in the dark as the fans.

She explained: "I mean, I don't know what's going on with that. I think that they want to make it. It's such an important film for them, they're taking their time with it. I really don't have any information. I don't know why it's taken the time that it has. We will see."

Her comments highlight the uncertainty surrounding the reboot, but they also suggest Marvel still sees value in getting this movie right.

One of the most intriguing early concepts for Blade was its 1920s setting, something fans had been excited about for a while. According to Goth, that version got surprisingly far into production.

When asked about the period-piece approach and her original involvement, she shared: "Yeah, the furthest it got with me...I auditioned for that. I flew to Atlanta, we did a chemistry test between Mahershala and I. We did a costume fitting and a wig fitting. I was very excited for the direction it was going. It was very cool."

She went on to praise Ali’s approach to the character, saying: "Mahershala had such an interesting take on it. It was great. And then it just unravelled from there, unfortunately."

Those details paint an interesting picture of what could have been. A 1920s supernatural noir starring Ali and Goth sounds like a project fans would have eaten up. Then we got Sinners.

The actress also talked about her audition for Shawn Levy’s upcoming Star Wars film, Starfighter, and her enthusiasm. She explained: "That was on Zoom. And that was a few times on Zoom. It was Shawn. Gosling wasn't there. There were sides. The sides were great."

Goth went on to reflect on her connection to the franchise, saying: "I watched the George Lucas movies with my dad when I was growing up. Those, in particular, have a special place in my heart.

“I didn't know what it was going to be, but I really am having such an incredible time. Shawn has an energy that I've never met. He's electric, and it has a trickle-down effect on the rest of the set.

“He's so excited and so inspired. It's contagious. Everyone else benefits from it. It's an incredible experience."

When asked about her character, rumored to be a villain, she kept things simple: "She's very cool."

As for Blade, if it does eventually move forward, the film will likely hit theaters after Avengers: Secret Wars. Marvel is clearly trying to figure out the best path forward with the movie and they want to get it right.
