Nathan Fillion Teases a Big Guy Gardner Change for MAN OF TOMORROW

Guy Gardner is heading back to the big screen in Man of Tomorrow, but Nathan Fillion won't look exactly the same when he slips on that Green Lantern ring again.

The actor has confirmed that Guy is getting an upgrade for James Gunn's Superman sequel, and yes, it involves that wonderfully ridiculous haircut.

Fillion first appeared as Guy Gardner in last summer's Superman, bringing plenty of attitude and one spectacular bowl cut to the DCU. He later returned in Peacemaker Season 2 alongside Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl.

Guy isn't going anywhere anytime soon, either. Fillion is also appearing in Lanterns, and the animated Mister Miracle series. At this rate, Guy Gardner is turning into one of the characters linking several corners of James Gunn and Peter Safran's growing DC Universe.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Fillion pushed back on the idea that he's the DCU's "anchor being," offering a much more fitting description of his place in this universe:

"I do think I am a thread being. The quilt of the DC universe is being assembled before us. We’re witnessing the pieces coming forth, and now we’re starting to see threads between those pieces tying them together. Guy Gardner is enjoying being one of those characters that is the backdrop to this universe. It affords some consistency."

Fillion also seems pretty happy that he's now permanently associated with one of DC's most entertaining Green Lanterns.

"When you say Guy Gardner, you will always now say Nathan Fillion in that same breath. I can’t imagine that kind of good fortune."

Of course, playing Guy also means living with one of the most aggressively questionable hairstyles in superhero history. Fillion wore the same bowl-cut wig for Superman and Lanterns because the two projects were filmed "pretty close together," but things are changing for his next movie appearance.

According to Fillion, "We updated the hairdo just a little bit."

That's the big Guy Gardner update for Man of Tomorrow. It sounds like the bowl cut isn't necessarily being thrown into the trash, but Gunn and company have apparently decided it could use some tweaking.

Whether that means Guy will look a little less goofy remains to be seen, but considering how much mileage Superman got out of that hair, it'll be fun to see the new version.

Production on Man of Tomorrow has remained relatively guarded so far. David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult have been spotted on set, but that's a major difference from Superman, where filming in Cleveland gave fans a pretty extensive look at the cast, costumes, and action. More could still surface as production continues.

Guy Gardner also won't be the only Green Lantern joining the action. Lanterns star Aaron Pierre will bring John Stewart into the movie, and his time playing the character for the HBO series gave him a huge advantage before stepping onto the Man of Tomorrow set.

Pierre explained: "I can't say much, but what I can say is what a gift it was to have had six months consecutively of six-day weeks and a minimum of 12-hour days to live with John and excavate his character before going into Man of Tomorrow.

“I think my experience on Man of Tomorrow with the wonderful team over there would have been a lot different had I not done the HBO series first."

That lengthy production gave Pierre months to figure out who John Stewart is before having to bring him into a much bigger superhero movie.

"[Without Lanterns, I would have gone in there and been discovering in real time, in a very quick pace, who John was, but I already knew who John was going in. Of course, there's endless amounts of excavation to do now and always beyond this point. But I went in there with a calmness and a steady hand that I'm very grateful for."

Man of Tomorrow will force Superman to work with Lex Luthor against Brainiac, whose arrival threatens not only Metropolis but the entire world. That's a pretty great reason for two guys who normally aren't interested in becoming partners to temporarily put their differences aside.

There's still plenty we don't know about Gunn's next Superman adventure, but Brainiac, Lex Luthor, multiple Green Lanterns, Supergirl, Mister Terrific, and a slightly modified Guy Gardner haircut already give fans a lot to chew on.

Most importantly, the DCU's most infamous bowl cut is evolving. Whether Guy would consider that an improvement is another question entirely.

Man of Tomorrow hits theaters July 9, 2027.
