New Photo of Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon in Director Ridley Scott's Historical Epic

We’ve got a new photo to share with you from director Ridley Scott’s historical epic Napoleon, which sees Joaquin Phoenix in the role of Napoleon Bonaparte wielding a sword. When talking about the Emperor, Scott told Empire:

"I compare him with Alexander The Great. Adolf Hitler. Stalin. Listen, he's got a lot of bad shit under his belt. At the same time, he was remarkable with his courage, and in his can-do and in his dominance. He was extraordinary."

When it came to casting Phoenix in the role, Scott said that while he was watching Joker, he was thinking: “I’m staring at Joaquin and saying, ‘This little demon is Napoleon Bonaparte.’ He looks like him.” Pheonix went on to talk about the film that Scott made, saying:

“If you want to really understand Napoleon, then you should probably do your own studying and reading because if you see this film, it’s this experience told through Ridley’s eyes. It’s just such a complex world. I mean, it’s so f-king complex. What we were after was something that would capture the feeling of this man.”

The trailer for this movie was really good and got fans excited about the film. I’ve seen a 20-minute snowy battle scene in its entirety, and I have to say, it’s one of the greatest battle sequences ever put on film.

Napoleon is described as “a spectacle-filled action epic that details the checkered rise and fall of the iconic French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte” The film “captures Bonaparte's relentless journey to power through the prism of his addictive, volatile relationship with his one true love, Josephine (Vanessa Kirby), showcasing his visionary military and political tactics against some of the most dynamic practical battle sequences ever filmed.”

The movie “captures Napoleon’s famous battles, relentless ambition and astounding strategic mind as an extraordinary military leader and war visionary.”

When previously talking about the film, Scott said, "Napoleon is a man I've always been fascinated by. He came out of nowhere to rule everything — but all the while he was waging a romantic war with his adulterous wife Josephine. He conquered the world to try to win her love, and when he couldn't, he conquered it to destroy her, and destroyed himself in the process.”

The film was written by David Scarpa, and Apple Original Films and Sony Pictures Entertainment will release Napoleon on Wednesday, November 22, 2023.
