New Photos From STAR WARS: SKELETON CREW and Details on How the Series Will Play with Space Pirates

We’ve got a couple of new photos to share with you for Lucasfilm’s upcoming series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. One of them features Space Pirates and the other includes Jude Law as Jod Na Nawood.

Skeleton Crew follows the journey of four kids “who make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet, then get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy, crossing paths with the likes of Jod Na Nawood, the mysterious character played by Law.

“Finding their way home—and meeting unlikely allies and enemies—will be a greater adventure than they ever imagined.”

On their adventure, they will encounter Space Pirates, and during an interview with EW, co-creator Christopher Ford talked about the pirate aspect of the series.

Ford explained: “With the era we're in, we're kind of getting to play with that lawless thing. The Empire is gone, and so we're playing with a part of the galaxy that has a resurgence of piracy.”

He goes on to say: “Pirates are talked about so much in Star Wars. People would call Han Solo a pirate and he'd be like, ‘How dare you?’ And we've seen some awesome pirates in the animated shows.

“So this was something where both [executive producers] Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau were really excited to do more pirate stuff.”

Jon Watts also brought up Monkey Island, from the early 90’s Lucasfilm Games. The Secret of Monkey Island centers on a luckless and very loveable wannabe pirate named Guybrush Threepwood.  Set in the Caribbean, the game begins with you being set three challenges by a pirate gang to prove your worth.

Watts said: “I'm also a big fan of Monkey Island. That's also classic Lucas. So somewhere between Star Wars pirates and Monkey Island pirates. I think we found our sweet spot.”

In the photo above, the Pirate characters include Jaleel White as Gunter, a pesky character Star Wars fans may recognize: the unsavory Vane (Marti Matulis), who gave Din Djarin and Greef Karga such a hard time on The Mandalorian.

To the right of Gunter is Brutus (voiced by Fred Tatasciore and played by performance artist Stephan Oyoung), Pax (performance artist: Mike Estes), and Chaelt (Orange is the New Black's Dale Soules).

I love that this series is going to explore the edges of wild space in the Star Wars Universe. Watts went on ot say: “What's great about working at Lucasfilm is that they'll let you know if you've gone outside of the boundaries. Dave Filoni is our goalkeeper.”

He continued to talk about Filoni saying: “He actually is a great hockey player, but he's also a figurative goalkeeper. We will come up with ideas of things that we like, and then he'll be like, ‘Actually, maybe it's this.’ Or, ‘Oh, we already did something like that somewhere else.’

“And you always end up with a bunch of other episodes of Star Wars to go watch and things to go read, and it's good. You feel like you can safely explore things creatively without making some huge canonical mistake.”

Ford added: “And he gets both sides of that because he did that [mentoring under] George Lucas. So he gets that thing of, ‘I want to make a whole new kind of a Jedi,’ and then someone being like, ‘Okay, hold on. A lot of people have thought about this. Let's do this the right way.’ And it's so helpful.”

The series also stars Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Kyriana Kratter, Robert Timothy Smith, and Ryan Kiera Armstrong. Nick Frost also stars in the series as a droid.

The episodes in the show will be directed by Bryce Dallas Howard, The Daniels, David Lowery, Jake Schreier, and Lee Isaac Chung. The Mandalorian's Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni will executive produce.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew premieres Tuesday, Dec. 3, on Disney+. Bring on the Space Pirates!
